After a gap of six years, Calcutta University will once again host its convocation on campus. The ceremony is scheduled for March 23 and will take place at the Centenary Auditorium located on the College Street campus.
A notification released by the university confirmed the venue and arrangements for the event. The previous convocation in 2020 was organised at Nazrul Mancha in south Kolkata, while the Centenary Auditorium last hosted the ceremony in 2016.
The event will be presided over by the state governor, R.N. Ravi, who also serves as the chancellor of state-aided universities. Vice-chancellor Ashutosh Ghosh stated that approval for the convocation has already been received, and a formal invitation will be extended soon.
Earlier discussions regarding the convocation had taken place with the former governor, C.V. Ananda Bose. The keynote address at the ceremony will be delivered by Suman Chakraborty, director of IIT Kharagpur.
Approximately 1,100 research scholars who completed their doctoral studies between 2024 and 2026 will be awarded their degrees. The university will also confer honorary degrees upon Vijay Pandurang Bhatkar (DSc), Ranajit Das (DLitt), and Father Thomas Chatamparampil (DLitt).
Bhatkar is known for his contributions to India’s supercomputing efforts and has received major national honours. Das is recognised for his work in literature and education, while Chatamparampil previously served as vice-chancellor of Christ University.
In addition, ten medals will be presented to outstanding academics during the ceremony. Officials noted that convocations were not held after 2020 due to the pandemic and administrative changes.
The programme is set to begin at 12:30 pm, marking a return to the university’s tradition of hosting the convocation on its own campus after a temporary shift in venue during renovation work.
