Calcutta University is preparing to assess whether its affiliated colleges are ready to introduce an honours-with-research option in the fourth year of undergraduate studies. To support this initiative, the university has scheduled a two-day interaction with representatives from all 146 affiliated colleges.
The undergraduate programme follows a four-year structure divided into eight semesters. After completing three years, students can either graduate or continue into the fourth year. Those who finish the additional year receive an honours degree, while students who complete a research project or dissertation earn an honours degree with a research component.
Colleges have been asked to present details about their teaching staff, especially faculty members with doctoral qualifications. As per academic guidelines, departments must have at least two permanent PhD-qualified teachers along with adequate laboratory and library facilities to support the research-focused final year.
University officials will focus on evaluating whether colleges can manage the academic and infrastructural requirements of the final two semesters. Essential criteria include qualified research supervisors, sufficient space, and access to proper learning resources.
The meetings are being conducted in two phases, with Kolkata-based colleges attending on the first day and institutions from other districts on the second. Based on these discussions, the university will decide which colleges are eligible to conduct the seventh and eighth semesters. If some colleges are unable to meet the requirements, students interested in research may be allowed to continue their studies at nearby institutions that have the necessary facilities.
The university is also exploring a cluster model that would allow students to attend classes across neighbouring colleges, ensuring better access to resources.
College authorities have expressed the need for clearer guidelines for running the final year, as research at the undergraduate level is still a new concept. While many institutions have upgraded their infrastructure in recent years, they expect a clearer understanding of their readiness after participating in these discussions.
