Calcutta University has proposed new titles for certificates to be awarded to undergraduate students enrolled in its programmes. Students completing three-year multidisciplinary courses may be granted a qualification described as a graduation with two major subjects and one minor.
On Thursday, a university-appointed committee finalized suggested names for certificates corresponding to exit points after the first, second, third, and fourth years of study. These recommendations will be submitted to the Syndicate, the institution’s top decision-making authority, for approval.
The committee was set up after concerns arose regarding the term previously used for three-year multidisciplinary courses, as it did not align with the framework outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. There were apprehensions that retaining the earlier terminology could create complications for students seeking admission to higher studies. As a result, the panel was asked to develop more appropriate and widely acceptable titles.
Under the proposed system, students who complete a four-year programme will receive a degree titled Four-Year BA/BSc/BCom Honours, while those who meet the criteria for research will be awarded a Four-Year BA/BSc/BCom Honours with Research qualification.
For early exits, students leaving after one year would receive a One-Year Certificate Course specifying their subject, and those exiting after two years would be awarded a Two-Year Diploma Course, also indicating their field of study.
According to a committee member, these suggestions are set to be discussed in the upcoming Syndicate meeting, where a final decision will be made.
