CBSE explains QR Code confusion in Class 12 Maths Board Exam 2026 after viral rickroll claims | News

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has responded to online claims about a QR code printed on the Class 12 Mathematics board exam paper allegedly linking to a music video. The board stated that the examination papers are authentic and that the integrity of the exam system has not been compromised.

The clarification came after posts circulated on social media suggesting that scanning a QR code on some question papers directed users to the YouTube video for Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley. The prank, commonly referred to online as “rickrolling,” caused confusion among students after screenshots began spreading across different platforms.

Viral Posts Create Confusion

The Class 12 Mathematics examination was held on March 9. Shortly after the test concluded, images of the question paper appeared online. Some students claimed that scanning the printed QR code redirected them to the music video.

These claims spread quickly, particularly on platforms such as Reddit, where users shared screenshots and joked about the unexpected link appearing during an important board examination.

However, several students reported a different experience. According to them, scanning the QR code only displayed simple alphabetical markers such as “A” or “Q” instead of opening any external webpage.

Because of these differing reports, uncertainty grew about whether the circulating screenshots showed a genuine case, a technical malfunction, or a misleading image spreading online.

CBSE Confirms Authenticity of Question Papers

Following the discussion online, CBSE explained that its board exam papers include multiple security features. Among them are QR codes that help verify the authenticity of question papers in case any irregularities are suspected.

The board acknowledged that in a small number of question paper sets, scanning a QR code appeared to redirect users to a YouTube video. However, it clarified that this situation does not affect the legitimacy of the exam documents.

According to CBSE, the question papers used during the examination were genuine and the security measures protecting them remain intact.

Board to Take Preventive Measures

CBSE also noted that it has taken the concerns raised by students and parents seriously. While reaffirming that the exam papers were authentic, the board stated that appropriate steps will be implemented to avoid similar issues in future examinations.
