Loreto Day School Sealdah, a 168-year-old institution, has shifted its affiliation from the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). The school received approval in January, and its first ICSE batch is expected to sit for the Class X board examinations in 2028.
The school has long been associated with the state board and is known for supporting students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with many receiving fee concessions.
This move reflects a broader trend among schools in Kolkata. Institutions such as St Lawrence High School and The BSS School have also transitioned to ICSE in recent years, along with Loreto Day School Bowbazar.
School authorities indicated that increasing demand from parents influenced the decision. The ICSE curriculum has already been introduced from lower nursery to Class IX, with current Class IX students forming the first ICSE batch.
The school is also gradually shifting its academic calendar from a January start to a March–April session, aligning with ICSE and CBSE schedules.
While acknowledging the strong foundation provided by the state board, the school views this transition as a step toward meeting evolving educational needs. The ICSE framework emphasizes conceptual learning, language development, and experiential education, helping students build critical thinking skills.
Other Loreto institutions in Kolkata, including Loreto House and Loreto Convent Entally, are already affiliated with CISCE.
At the Sealdah campus, around half of the students benefit from financial concessions, and many are first-generation learners. The school remains committed to developing confident, responsible, and well-rounded individuals while carrying forward its longstanding values.
