The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has removed a Class 8 social science textbook from circulation after concerns were raised about a chapter discussing the judiciary. The organisation also issued a public apology regarding the matter.
In an official statement, NCERT confirmed that the book titled Exploring Society: India and Beyond – Grade 8 (Part II) contained a chapter that explained the role of the judiciary in society. Following criticism and concerns about the chapter’s content, the council decided to withdraw the textbook entirely.
According to the council, the decision to remove the book was taken by NCERT’s Director along with other members of the organisation. As a result, the textbook will no longer be distributed to schools or used in classrooms.
NCERT also expressed regret over the situation and apologised for any inconvenience caused to students, teachers, and other stakeholders. However, the statement did not provide detailed information about the specific issues related to the chapter.
The development has also sparked wider discussions about how constitutional institutions are presented in school textbooks. Experts point out that NCERT publications are used extensively in both central and state-affiliated schools across India.
Because of their widespread use, any modification, revision, or withdrawal of an NCERT textbook can affect a large number of students and educators.
Further clarification from the council regarding possible revisions and updated curriculum plans for the upcoming academic session is expected.
