The state education department has instructed all government-supported universities to commence postgraduate academic sessions from August 1. Universities have also been advised to complete admissions through an online process while maintaining a strictly merit-based selection system.
Earlier, authorities had announced that undergraduate classes across colleges and universities should begin from July 6 as part of efforts to maintain a structured academic calendar.
Universities operating through affiliated colleges, including Calcutta University, must reserve 80% of postgraduate seats for students graduating from affiliated institutions. The remaining 20% will be available for candidates from other universities.
In unitary institutions such as Jadavpur University, priority will similarly be given to the university’s own undergraduate students under the 80% reservation framework.
Education department officials explained that advancing the academic schedule is aimed at preventing delays in syllabus completion and examinations. Last year, postgraduate classes reportedly started in September, but this year the authorities want classes to begin a month earlier.
Officials also noted that delayed sessions often encourage students to pursue higher studies outside West Bengal, leading to a loss of local talent.
