Scottish Church College is preparing to launch a second academic campus inside the historic Ogilvie Building following a major renovation project that continued for nearly two years. The restored structure is expected to begin functioning in June after its formal inauguration.
To manage increasing student enrolment and additional academic requirements, the institution has decided to relocate its commerce and BBA departments to the newly renovated campus. Authorities are also considering introducing new academic programmes once autonomous status is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The Ogilvie Building, constructed in 1914 on Hartaki Bagan Lane near Duff Street, originally served as one of the college’s boys’ hostels. It was named after the first principal of the General Assembly’s Institution, the earlier identity of Scottish Church College before its renaming in 1929.
Redevelopment work began after hostel residents were gradually shifted from the premises starting in 2022. The college also initiated a fundraising campaign to support the renovation and conversion of the old hostel into a modern academic block.
Several colleges across Kolkata are similarly upgrading their infrastructure to meet the demands of the revised undergraduate education structure. Behala College, which recently received autonomous status, has launched career-oriented courses in cyber security, multimedia studies, web development, design, and computer applications.
The college is also constructing additional infrastructure to house laboratories and classrooms for these programmes. Until the building is completed, administrators are planning to utilise existing facilities more efficiently through multiple class shifts.
New Alipore College has also undertaken expansion efforts by constructing a three-storey academic building intended to support the additional year in undergraduate studies. Officials expect the facility to become operational soon.
