St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, has announced plans to introduce BTech programmes starting next year. The institution will conduct its own entrance examination to select students for these new engineering courses.
According to vice-chancellor Father Felix Raj, the university is currently developing the infrastructure required for the programmes. The announcement was made during the institution’s fifth convocation ceremony held in New Town.
The university, which began with courses in commerce and humanities, expanded into the sciences in 2022 by introducing programmes in statistics and computer science. The move into engineering marks another step in broadening its academic offerings.
In addition to the BTech programmes, the university is also planning to introduce a Master of Laws (LLM) course later this year.
During the convocation ceremony at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, 889 students received their degree certificates. The event was attended by international development expert Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, who delivered the convocation address.
Honorary doctorates were also awarded to scientist and former Madras University vice-chancellor Fr. S. Ignacimuthu and senior lawyer R.N. Jhunjhunwala of the Calcutta High Court.
University leadership highlighted its mission of promoting values such as justice, equality, freedom, and service to society, encouraging graduates to apply these principles as they begin their professional journeys.
An initiative has also been introduced to support hostel residents who face academic challenges, providing them with additional guidance and counselling.
In his address, Yumkella emphasised the importance of sustainable development and energy transition, noting that graduates are entering the workforce during a time marked by climate challenges, economic uncertainties, and global tensions.
