RET in Women's Studies Research Centre 2025
Applications are invited for admission to the Women's Studies Research Centre,
University of Calcutta for Ph.D. Course and subsequent research work leading to
Ph.D. degree in Women's Studies Research Centre.
The total number of seats is 12.
The admission to the Ph.D. programme will be guided by Ph.D. Regulation of
Calcutta University and other relevant rules and orders of the University. Reservation
rules as applicable as under National / State reservation policy.
Candidates desiring to pursue research work in Women's Studies Research Centre
may apply in the prescribed proforma by paying Rs.100/- though SBI collect
(Calcutta University > Payment for MISC Fees > Filled up Application for Admission
to Ph.D., along with the self-attested relevant documents and the payment receipt, is
to be submitted by physically visiting the Alipore Campus (1, Reformatory Street,
Kolkata 700027, 4th Floor) and depositing it at office of the Director, WSRC on
working days between 12.30 PM to 4.30 PM by 02/09/2025
The Process of Admission
Written test will be of 50 marks of two hours duration. The modules of test will be as follows:
- Multiple choice questions of 1 mark each - 30 marks
- One essay type question – 20 marks
Qualifying marks for the written test is 25 marks
Interview will be of 50 marks following the clauses of 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7 and 5.8 and
other clauses as applicable.
Syllabus for the written test
- Major Concepts: Cultural aspects and social construction of gender roles and identity, Patriarchal paradigm, Gender-class-caste interface.
- Women’s Studies: Meaning, basic concepts and significance.
Growth of Women’s Studies in India and in other countries,
Millennium Development Goals, Women’s movement in India.

Theoretical approaches to feminism: Liberal; Radical; PostModernist; Psychoanalytical.

Gender Issues in India: Issues related to health, work, violence and sexuality, Women in public space and in politics.

Women’s empowerment and gender mainstreaming: Rights,
laws and policies for women’s empowerment, provisions for
women in the Indian constitution.
Eligibility

Candidates should have their Master's Degree in Women's Studies / Arts (Buddhist
Studies, English, History, Political Science, Philosophy) / Home Science / Science
(Psychology, Anthropology) / Education or any other discipline subject to the
approval of Ph.D. Advisory Committee before registration.

b) from other UGC recognized Universities / Institutes
Application Process
Those candidates, who have already passed NET/SET/SLET/GATE Examinations need not appear in the written examinations and can directly appear at the interview. All candidates (including those in exempted category) are required to Download the Application Form from the University website:
www.caluniv.ac.in (Admission Notification) and submit the same to the office of the Director.

- All candidates applying to RET and or interview must constantly watch the website.

No personal intimation will be sent to any applicant.
- The RET (Ph.D. Entrance Test) will be held offline.
