Clarification on totaling of marks when extra questions are attempted
A few queries have been received from students, who have obtained the scanned copy of their evaluated answer book where they have mentioned about a totaling discrepancy as per the calculation sheet in answer book received and marks shown as total marks obtained. ( An example enclosed for ready reference).
There are many internal choices given in question papers for students to choose from while answering their questions. Many times, students answer more than the requisite number of questions. As a matter of policy, CBSE has always taken the best obtained marks by the candidate and mentioned the other question/subpart attempted as Over Attempt. In such cases, system is considering better of the two marks for calculating result. Such marks which were not considered are shown as star marked asterisk (*).
In the example enclosed, there is an internal choice in question 31 (a) or (b) which means a student has to attempt either the subparts of question 31 (a) or the subparts of question 31(b). The marks obtained by the candidate in Question 31(a) are 3 while that obtained in Question 31(b) are 2. Hence, 3 marks awarded for question 31(a) have been taken in the total and there is an asterisk mark on 31 (b)_ii_i and 31(b)_ii_II with a foot note which reads marked marks are omitted for totaling. Thus, the total of the candidate becomes 43.5 which have been rounded off to 44.
Hence, all candidates are requested to see the asterisk mark and the foot note given before calculating the total marks obtained and shown on the calculation sheet.
