  • The conditions for eligibility will be guided overall by the rules specified in the notification regarding Regulations for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) of the University of Calcutta.
  • Eligibility:
    Candidates holding a Master’s degree in Marine Science, relevant Science disciplines, or Technology from any UGC-recognized University/Institute with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate (or 50% marks for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC categories) are eligible to apply for admission to the Ph.D. Programme in Marine Science. As per clause 6.4(a), candidates with BE / BTech degree in relevance subjects also are eligible to apply. Applicants whose qualifying degree is in a relevant subject must obtain prior endorsement from the Ph.D. Research Advisory Committee of the Department of Marine Science. This endorsement must be submitted along with the application for admission. (Reference: Clause 5.3 of the University of Calcutta Regulations for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), 2016). Candidates who have qualified in GATE/NET-JRF or hold a Teacher’s Fellowship or have been declared eligible for Ph.D. admission only, or have secured a DSTINSPIRE Fellowship, or possess an M.Phil. or M.Tech. degree are exempted from the written entrance test. However, such candidates are still required to appear for and qualify in the interview. Preference will be given to candidates who have published research articles in reputed peer-reviewed journals.

    (a) Overseas students will be required to produce clearance from the government of India and/or other appropriate authorities, if any, for admission to the Ph.D. Programme. Enrolment in the Ph.D. programme may be allowed to only such foreign nationals as have obtained and are holding research visa.

    (b) The valid non-creamy layer certificate would have to be submitted by OBC candidates.


  • Reservations will be followed as per the existing West Bengal Higher Educational Institutions (Reservations in Admissions) Rules Act, 2013.
  • Number of seats: 18
  • The prescribed application fee of Rs. 100/- is to be deposited online through SBI Collect https://www.onlinesbi.com/sbicollect/ For making the payment go to the site specified above, then choose State-(West Bengal), Type- (Educational Institution), then select Calcutta University and proceed to Category- (Payment of Misc. Fees), choose Application for Admission to PhD and proceed to the next step.
  • Form Submission
    Interested candidates are requested to submit the filled in application form (Annexed below) along with following self-attested testimonials to the office of the Department of Marine Science, C.U., 7th Floor, Ballygunge Science College campus, 35, B.C. Road, Kolkata700019 on all University working days between 12 noon to 3 pm by June, 30, 2025.
    • Recent passport size colour photo of the candidate.
    • P G. final Mark sheet.
    • Rank Card/Certificate etc. of NET/SET/GATE. etc.
    • Valid Caste Certificate, if applicable (SC/ST/OBC-A/OBC-B etc.).
    • SBI Collect Transaction document.
      *Please note that candidates who are eligible for waiver of the written test are also required to complete and submit the application form by the above deadline.
  • Structure of the entrance examination and subsequent process:
    Admission Test of 50 marks will be conducted based on M. Sc. Syllabus of Marine Science in Calcutta University. The qualifying marks for the interview will be 50% of the total marks of the admission test.

    a. The questions in the written test of RET will comprise of two parts: Group-A (10 marks): one broad answer type of question (answer to be given in approx. 250 words); Group-B: (40 marks): twenty short answer type of questions (each question will bear 2 marks). All candidates appearing at the RET written part will need to answer all questions. Questions will be to test the grasp of the candidates in different branches of Marine Science.

    b. The qualifying marks for Written Test will be 50%.

    c. Candidates successful in the written examination would have to compete with other eligible candidates who have already cleared NET / SET / GATE / M. Tech. at the interview stage.
  • Dates of Research Eligibility Test:
    Date & time of the Ph.D. Entrance examination: 07 July, 2025, from 12.00- 1.00 PM Declaration of eligible candidates for interview: 18 July 2025, at 3.00 PM The date of the interview will be communicated to the eligible candidates via email. Declaration of names of finally selected candidates will be displayed in the Departmental Notice Board after approval by the University Authority
  • Kindly note that RET qualification does not ensure Research Fellowship.
    NB. Failure to attach any one of the required documents will lead to immediate rejection of application. Under no circumstances, documents can be appended after submission.
