Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility and Selection Criteria for Ph.D. Level Admission at Nalanda University for Indian and International Students
  • Nalanda University offers 4 year doctoral programme for national and international students
  • For full time students, it's a fully residential programme
  • For part-time students, residence will not be provided (baring contact programmes / workshops for a period of not exceeding more than seven days)
Essential Eligibility Criteria:
  • Applicant should have a Master's degree with at least 65% marks or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA), preferably with dissertation at Masters' level or M.Phil. Degree with 65% marks or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • Applicant to submit a Letter of Self Introduction, and 2 Letters of Recommendation/ References.
  • Applicant to submit a Statement of Purpose (SoP). The SoP should clearly state:
    • The reason for opting the course/programme
    • The reason for choosing Nalanda University
  • Applicant to submit a detailed Research Proposal (A Plagiarism check report with similarity of 10% or less from Turnitin must be attached to the proposal).
  • Applicant to submit evidence of any research such as writing samples or published papers (at least 2 to 3).
  • International applicants have to submit a language proficiency proof such as:
    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
    • Any other standard English test on international platform
    • Or, completed a full-time degree-level course taught and assessed entirely in English
  • NET/CSIRNET Qualified is a mandatory eligibility for Indian candidates.
  • Assessment will be done on the basis of online interaction, document verification and Interview before final shortlisting for admission.
Eligibility Criteria for Employed Applicants (Part-time):
  • Applicant should have a Master's degree with at least 65% marks or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA), preferably with dissertation at Masters' level or M.Phil. Degree with 60% marks or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • Applicant must have a minimum of 8-10 years of work experience.
  • Applicant to submit a Letter of Self Introduction, and 2 Letters of Recommendation/References.
  • Applicant to submit a Statement of Purpose (SoP) (The SoP should clearly state the reason for opting the course/programme and choosing Nalanda University).
  • Applicant to submit a detailed Research Proposal (A Plagiarism check report with similarity of 10% or less from turnitin must be attached to the proposal).
  • Applicant to submit evidence of any research such as writing samples or published papers (at least 2 to 3).
  • Application should be forwarded through proper channel along with a NOC from the present employer.
  • International applicants have to submit language proficiency proof such as:
    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
    • Any other standard English test on international platform
    • Or, completed a full-time degree-level course taught and assessed entirely in English
Eligibility Criteria for Masters' programme for Indian and International Students
A minimum of three years Bachelor's degree (10+2+3) is required from any recognised Indian University.

Minimum criteria is 55% or 2.2/4.0 GPA or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA) in Under Graduate Degree.

Students from any stream i.e Humanities/Sciences/Engineering/Management/Law etc. can apply for any programme, however students may not apply for more than two programmes.
How to Apply: On the Portal, please submit.
(i) Self-Introduction/Bio-Note Statement (Not more than 250 words)
(ii) Statement of Purpose (SoP)

- Why do you want to study at Nalanda University (100 words)
- The reasons for choosing the programme (300-500 words)
(iii) Proof of English proficiency is required for students coming from non English speaking countries/medium: (Please attach)
- TOEFL/IELTS or any other standard certification in English
*The candidate having full-time degree-level course, entirely taught and assessed in English need not submit any certificate

For MBA in Sustainable Development and Management (in addition to the above criteria)
  • For Indian students, a minimum score of 70 percentile in CAT or XAT or MAT is required.
  • For international students, a minimum credit score/GPA at Undergraduate level to be 3.0/4.0 GPA or equivalent GPA or relevant GMAT score.
  • For Working Executives
    • Minimum 5 years of working experience.
    • No Objection Certificate is required from employer for working executives/sponsored candidates/ candidates on sabbatical/candidates recommended by PSUs/GOI Departments.
    • CAT/XAT/MAT score will not be applicable.
A minimum of three years Bachelor's degree (10+2+3) is required from any recognised Indian University.

A GPA of at least 2.2 or above on a 4 point scale or equivalent grade if other grade point scale is used.
Admission Process
Master's and PhD Programmes:
The entire application process for admissions is paperless and online in keeping with the University's commitment to sustainability. The Application form has to be filled in entirety, and submitted along with the Statement of Purpose (SoP), self-introductory note, and the documents mentioned therein.

For Indian Students:
The candidate has to visit the University website for filling the online Application Form using online-portal Apply here

The duly-filled Application Form and a Statement of Purpose (SOP) along with all the documents should be submitted to admissions2025@nalandauniv.edu.in. The candidate has to pay an Application Fee of INR 500 (Rupees Five Hundred only) towards the processing of the application through RTGS/NEFT using the details given below:

For International Students:
International students have to visit the University website for filling the online Application Form using online-portal Apply here

The duly-filled Application Form and a Statement of Purpose (SOP) along with all the documents should be submitted to foreignstudents@nalandauniv.edu.in. The candidate has to pay an Application Fee of USD 08 (Eight US Dollars only or equivalent in Indian currency) towards the processing of the Application through RTGS/NEFT using the details given below:

Selection of candidates
  • Shortlisted applicants will be called for an Interview in person or through video conferencing as per the intimated schedule. Selection will be purely on merit.
  • Selected candidates will be recommended for the provisional admission for the academic year 2025-26.
  • University reserves the right to admit/not admit without specifying any reason.
  • The University reserves the right to evolve the criteria for short-listing candidates based on the norms and regulations of the University amended from time to time.
  • It is not guaranteed that all the applicants who have filled the Application Form and appeared in the entrance test/interview would be selected for admission at the University.
  • Selected candidates will be intimated through email.

  • Before you proceed to fill the application form please ensure that you have read and understood the eligibility criteria for the PROGRAMME you are applying for.
  • Meeting the eligibility criteria is mandatory to get admission to Nalanda University.
  • Please select the Program you wish to seek admission to. Only ONE program can be selected per application form. If you wish to apply for more than one program, use separate application forms.
  • Please fill the application form only in ENGLISH, unless it is specified to write in any other language.
  • Application form needs to be completed. If any field/s do not apply to you, mark as N/A.
  • Please be careful in filling up the information in all aspects. Incomplete admission form will not be accepted.
  • Any error/misinformation in the application form shall result in cancellation of seat.
  • Candidate should fill his / her basic details like Date of Birth (DOB), Address, State, City, Country, Contact / Mobile Numbers and Email very carefully.
  • Enter your First name/ Middle name/Family name in the space provided. The name should be same as mentioned in the Class X/XII/School leaving certificate.
  • Important updates on the admission process will be available on the website.
  • Before final submission of Application Form, read the declaration carefully and give your consent on it, failing which your application will remain incomplete.
  • Once submitted no changes/modifications will be possible for the information provided. No communication shall be entertained in this regard.
