Ph.D. Admission in Arabic & Persian 2025

Enrolment to Ph.D. Programme in Arabic and Persian

Applications are invited for admission to the Department of Arabic and Persian, University of Calcutta for Ph.D. Course and subsequent research work leading to Ph.D. degree in Arabic and Persian. Candidates desiring to pursue research work in Arabic and Persian may apply in the prescribed pro-forma (attached herewith) by paying Rs. 100/- (Through Online) by 18th September 2025.

Applicants having Master’s Degree in Arabic/Persian will have to appear in an entrance Test of 100 marks, to be held in this Department on 30th October 2025 at 1.00 pm, comprising a written examination. The result of the entrance test will be published on 6th November, 2025 on the Department Notice Board. The viva-voce will be conducted on 25th November 2025. List of the selected candidate will be published tentatively by 2nd December 2025 (subject to the approval of the appropriate authority) on the University website and Department Notice Board.

Master’s degree holders in Arabic/Persian with 55% marks/ ‘B’ grade in UGC 7 point scale/ equivalent grade in aggregate are eligible to apply. 5% relaxation in marks would be allowed to candidates belonging to the SC/ ST/ OBC (non-creamy layer) /Differently abled categories and the candidates obtained their Master degree prior to 19.09.1991.



Details of the Entrance Test

  1. The Written Examination of Three-hour (03) duration shall comprise 02 long Questions of 40 marks, and 30 Multiple Choice Type Questions of 2 marks each, from the core subjects. There will be no negative marking.
  2. Long Questions and MCQ would be based on the Masters’ level syllabus in Arabic and Persian.
  3. Qualifying marks for Entrance Test will be 50%.
  4. Successful candidates in the written examination will be called for an interview of 50 marks.
  5. Candidates who have already passed NET/ SET/ MPhil examinations/ obtained DST-INSPIRE Fellowship or under Teacher Fellowship are exempted from written examination. They can directly appear in the interview/viva-voce.
  6. Interview/viva-voce of the eligible candidates would take place in the office of the HoD on 25th November 2025 at 1.00 pm. Candidates must produce a well-structured research proposal during the interview (not more than 1500 words or four A4-size papers).
  7. The list of qualified candidates for enrolment to the Ph. D. programme would be displayed in the Department Notice Board as well as on the University website tentatively by 2nd December 2025 (subject to the approval of the appropriate authority).

❖ At present 18 candidates (11 in Arabic and 07 in Persian) against available vacancies will be enrolled, if qualified, as Probationary Ph.D. Students under the empanelled supervisors.

Relevant National/State Reservation policy shall be strictly followed in this process.

Filled in application forms, accompanied by the Online Payment Receipt of Rs.100/- should be submitted in hard copy to the office of the Department of Arabic and Persian, Asutosh Building, 2nd Floor, 87/1, College Street, Kolkata - 700073 on all working days between 12 Noon to 4 PM.

Fees will be paid through SBI Online Payment.
