Ph.D. programme in the Department of Biophysics, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics in September 2025

Applications are invited for admission to the Ph.D. Programme in the Department of Biophysics, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics. Candidates willing to pursue research work leading subsequently to the Ph.D. (Sc.) degree in Biophysics, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics, University of Calcutta, should apply in plain paper in the format available on the Calcutta University website to the Head of the Department, after making payment of application fee (non-refundable) of Rs. 100/- (Rs. One hundred only) online through SBI collect (URLs: https://www.onlinesbi.sbi/sbicollect/icollecthome.htm) or at the University Cash Counter through a challan available from the University Sales Counter at the C.U. College Street Campus.



The eligible candidates will have to appear at a written examination to be held in the Department of Biophysics, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics, the details of which are appended below. Successful candidates will have to appear for a viva-voce/counseling. The final selection for joining the Ph.D. Programme of this Department, along with the allocation of supervisor, will be made on the basis of this viva voce / counseling.

The candidates who have already qualified UGC-CSIR (JRF) Examinations; NET/SET/SLET/GATE or have obtained DST INSPIRE Fellowship/Teacher fellowship or have passed equivalent examinations or passed M. Phil/M.Tech/M.D/M.E./M.Pharma or equivalent examination shall not be required to appear at the written test.

Distribution of Marks and qualifying marks for written Examination:
Full Marks for written examination: 100 (50 MCQ type).

Qualifying marks: 50 out of 100 for general candidates; For SC/ST candidates and OBC candidates as per rule.

  • Maximum No. of Ph. D. Students to be admitted: 9 (Nine)
    Reservation norm will be followed as per West Bengal State Higher Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Rules 2013.
  • Last date of receiving application: July 03, 2025 (at the Office of the Department of Biophysics, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics).
  • List of eligible candidates for written examination to be conveyed via email: July 08, 2025.
  • Tentative date for written examination (in offline mode at the Department of Biophysics, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics): July 16, 2025. (from 12:00 - 13:00)
  • Date of declaration of results of the written examination: July 16, 2025 (after 16:00)
  • Tentative date for viva-voce (in offline mode at the Department of Biophysics, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics): July 17, 2025.
  • Syllabus: Same as M. Sc. CBCC Syllabus of the Department of Biophysics, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics, University of Calcutta.
