The centralized undergraduate admission process has been extended once more, with the new deadline set for July 30. This third extension comes as authorities await legal clarity on OBC reservation policies.
A Supreme Court hearing scheduled for Monday is expected to address the matter. Until a decision is made, officials say the merit list cannot be finalized. “We’re hoping for a clear direction next week,” said one source familiar with the situation.
As of Friday evening, over 3.5 lakh students had registered on the portal, with more than 20 lakh applications submitted.
The ongoing delays have left college principals frustrated. Some voiced concern over the indefinite nature of the process. “We’re watching institutions in other states move ahead, while we’re stuck waiting,” said one principal. “How much longer can this go on?”
Lady Brabourne College Principal Siuli Sarkar acknowledged that extending the deadline was unavoidable given the unresolved reservation issue. On the other hand, Santa Datta De, interim Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, questioned why a resolution hadn’t been reached yet. “Our own UG admissions are done, and classes begin August 1. But affiliated colleges are still in limbo.”
Meanwhile, some institutions not using the centralized portal, such as Scottish Church College, have nearly completed admissions and plan to begin classes on time. Principal Madhumanjari Mandal noted that while most seats are filled, they’re keeping admissions open due to pending entrance exam results.
