Delays UG Admissions Awaiting Centralized Portal

The state’s higher education authority has directed Calcutta University to postpone admission activities for certain undergraduate courses conducted internally by the university. This comes in anticipation of the soon-to-be-launched centralized admission portal.

Calcutta University had decided in a faculty council meeting on May 21 to begin admissions for a few internal undergraduate programs, such as food and nutrition, human development, and music. The university chose to proceed without applying OBC reservation criteria to avoid legal complications. However, the university did not release any official admission notification following the meeting. According to sources, the higher education department advised the university to delay the process until the centralized system is operational.

A university official emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency in the admission schedule across all affiliated colleges and the university itself. “We are ready to initiate the process anytime but are waiting for the state’s official go-ahead,” the official added.

Interim Vice-Chancellor Santa Datta Dey expressed concern over the delay in undergraduate admissions across affiliated institutions, noting that the internal courses were planned separately, but the issue surrounding OBC reservations has caused a standstill. She questioned how long students should remain in limbo and suggested that admissions could proceed without the disputed reservation criteria, with adjustments made later as needed. The university is also consulting legal experts for clarity on the issue.

Currently, all 159 colleges affiliated with Calcutta University, along with other institutions that rely on the centralized admission system, are still awaiting an official start date. Rabindra Bharati University, which independently handles admissions for fine arts and visual arts, also has not finalized its timeline. Meanwhile, private and autonomous colleges such as St. Xavier’s, Scottish Church, and Shri Shikshayatan have already concluded their application periods and begun releasing merit lists.

A principal from one of CU’s colleges expressed concern that while private institutions are progressing smoothly, the uncertainty surrounding public admissions may again result in unfilled seats and the potential loss of talented students unwilling to wait.
