Admission to Ph.D. Programme in Sociology for the academic session 2025-26

Applications are invited for admission to Ph.D. Programme in Sociology for the session 2025-26 The proforma for application is available with this advertisement in the University website www.caluniv.ac.in. The application form, duly filled in, along with all the relevant documents, is to be submitted to the office of the Head, Department of Sociology, University of Calcutta, 1 Reformatory Street, Alipore, Kolkata - 700027 after payment of Rs. 100/- (online) through SBI collect [http://www.onlinesbi.com/sbicollect] within one month from the date of uploading in the University website.

  • The admission to the Ph.D. programme is guided as per rules and regulation of Calcutta University and other relevant rules and orders of the University. Admission will be made on the basis of a written test (RET) followed by a personal interview, whichever is applicable.
  • Eligibility: Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. program shall have a Master's degree in Sociology with at least 55% of marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade B+ in the UGC 7-point scale or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever the grading system is followed A relaxation of 5% of marks or an equivalent relaxation of grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC-A/OBC-B/Person with Disability (PWD) and other categories as per UGC guidelines. Candidates with NET/ SET/SLET/ M. Phil in Sociology are exempted from appearing for the written test but need to appear for the interview.
  • Total number of seats: 08 and admission shall be made following the West Bengal State Higher Educational Institutions (Reservations in Admission) Rules, 2013.
  • List of candidates eligible for written test will be displayed on the notice board of the Department and also on the University website within ten days from the last date of submission of application. No personal intimation will be sent to any applicant.
  • List of candidates eligible for appearing at the interview will be displayed on the notice board of the Department and also on the University website after the publication of RET result.
  • Syllabus for the Entrance Test (RET): Written test will be conducted of 50 marks of 2 hours of duration in offline mode at the Department of Sociology, 5th floor, University of Calcutta, 1, Reformatory Street, Alipore, Kolkata-700027. The questions for the admission test will be based on M.A syllabus of Sociology, University of Calcutta (CBCS). The question paper will be descriptive type containing 4 (four) questions, out of which 2 questions are to be answered of 25 marks each.
  • Qualifying marks for Written Entrance Test: 50% for general category and relaxation for the Reserved Categories as per government rules and regulations.
  • Interview of 100 marks: All the candidates who qualify in the written test and the candidates who are exempted from written test under the 'Regulation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. Regulation 2016' of Calcutta University will have to appear for interview, subject to equivalence clearance from the Registrar’s office, wherever required. The equivalence clearance may be obtained from the Registrar’s office, University of Calcutta, College Street campus as early as possible and latest before the submission of application form.
  • Date and time of Written test and Interview would be communicated through the University of Calcutta website only.
    Venue for the written test and interview: Department of Sociology, 5th floor, University of Calcutta, 1, Reformatory Street, Alipore, Kolkata-700027.
  • Publication of the final list of candidates qualified for enrollment in the Ph.D. programme will be displayed at Departmental notice board as and when approval is received.
  • Appearing for the interview does not guarantee admission to the Ph.D. programme and Ph.D. registration.

  • Filled in application forms, accompanied by the Payment Receipt of Rs. 100/- and all the relevant documents should be submitted to the Office of the Head, Department of Sociology, 5th floor, University of Calcutta, 1, Reformatory Street, Alipore, Kolkata - 700027 on all working days between 12 Noon -3:30 PM in an enclosed envelope. Fees will be paid through SBI Online payment.
  • Self-attested copies of Mark Sheets from school leaving to the latest are to be attached with the application form.
  • Original documents may be asked for as and when required by the appropriate authority.
  • All in-service candidates are required to submit a copy of the no-objection certificate from their present player.
  • Incomplete form (s) are liable to rejection.
