This Govt. Medical College Latur was started in 26.4.2002. It is situated in south central part of Maharashtra. Karnataka and Andhra state border stars at 70 km from this place. The college is affiliated to MUHS, Nashik. First batch of 100 MBBS students was admitted in July 2003. Admission are made through CET / NEET (85% from state CET and 15% from All India PMT).
The college was started in the premises of District Hospital (200 beds). Kasturba Gandhi Women hospital (60 beds) and Eye hospital (60beds) run by public health department of Maharshtra too were merged. These hospitals were transferred to medical education department with movable and immovable property including manpower on 1st Oct 2007. Extra land of 13 acres was made available by acquiring the land of old and discontinued narrow gauze railway. We have 53 acre of land. New hospital and college buildings were constructed with latest OT design, old building were expanded to accommodate pre and para clinical departments.
The First admitted batch appeared for the final year MBBS examination in the Nov / Dec 2007 and successfully completed the internship in Feb 2009. The final approval from MCI was obtained in Feb 2009.The bed strength was increased to 510 beds. ICCU and NICU were started. The graph of indoor as well outdoor patient is steadily increasing. Presently patient turnover has gone up three folds and transfer to higher centers has practically stopped.
Post BSC Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (PGDMLT) was started in 2005 with intake capacity of 10. The post graduate courses in medical sciences were started in May 2010 (11 subjects, 24 MD/MS, 6 Diploma) and in May 2011 (6 subjects, 13 MD/MS, 9 diploma). BPMT (Bachelor of paramedical Technology) were started (67 intake capacity) in July 2011. Nursing Diploma course (GNM). 20 admissions) was taken over from District Hospital in 2011.
The birth of this college enjoys an interesting story. There was regional imbalance of medical colleges and seats in 6 zones of Maharashtra. Mumbai, Pune zone had double or triple no. of seats when compared to Vidharbha(Nagpur), Marathwada (Aurangabad) and South Maharashtra. The newly started Maharashtra University Health Sciences (MUHS) based at Nashik had prepared the vision document in 2001 and highlighted this imbalance. MUHS had presented to the Honorable Governor His Excellency Hon P. C. Alexander and then Chief Minister Hon Vilasrao Deshmukh. Three new state govt. run medical colleges were started at Kolhapur, Akola and Latur. The essentiality certificate was obtained in Oct 2002 and MCI permission was obtained in Jan 2003.
