The Rabindra Bharati University Library was started along with the establishment of the University in 1962 in order to cater to the information needs of the faculty, research scholars, students, officers and non-teaching staff. Since then, the University library has gone from strength to strength to live up to the expectations of its immediate clientele.
The Library :
In the beginning, the library was located at Maharshi Bhavan, then at Ram Bhavan. Administrative building in Jorasanko Campus and then shifted to Ramanuj Block, Marakat Kunj and then finally now located in the Kendriya Granthagar Bhavan since the month of July 2001.
The University is proud of its libraries which amount to 21 in number. Apart from the large Central Library, (approximately total area 13,000 square feet) and the one at Jorasanko Campus, the University has 17 Departmental Libraries under the faculty of Arts, Fine Arts and Visual Arts. There are also libraries attached with Centre / School of Study. The facilities of the Central Library are used by all categories of member of both the campus.
Library Hours : The library hours of Central library are as follows –
Monday to Friday : 10.15 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.
Saturday : 10.15 a.m. to 5.45 p.m.
The Central library remains closed on Sunday and other University holidays.
Membership : The membership of this library is open to teachers, students, research scholars, officers and the non-teaching employees of the University. The reading facilities are provided to outside scholars engaged in serious reading and research.
Borrowing privileges of the users: All categories of members except the short term users (on a special permission) are entitled to borrow books from the Central Library.
Hostels
The University has five students’ hostels at present, two for the boys (one for SC/ST boys) and three for the girls. Construction work for another boys’ hostel is under progress. The total intake capacity in the boys’ hostel is 145 and the girls’ hostels can accommodate 50 boarders. Since about 80% of the students come from a hinterland lying far and beyond the walls of the city and a large number of them are from such far-flung areas as North Eastern States (Tripura and Assam in particular), Andamans and Bangladesh, the demand for a seat in the hostels is increasing every year which, however, can only be fragmentarily met by the University. Nevertheless, the university does not guarantee hostel accommodation to each and every outstation student.
Canteen
The University has two subsidized students’ canteens, one each on both the campuses. Besides these, there is another staff canteen at E.B Campus.
Health Care Centre
The Medical Unit was opened at Emerald Bower Campus on 17.02.2000 in aim of giving good medical services to the students, teachers and non teaching staffs.
They attend all the functions of the University including the Annual Sports. All the staff and students visit our Clinic for check up general health which includes measuring Weight, Blood Pressure, Height and Blood Sugar. We also provide all sorts of Emergency Treatment too.
We have engaged one General Physician for Emerald Bower Campus on all working days from 12 Noon to 4 PM.
We also provide E.C.G. services to all students and staffs.
Sports Board
The University provides training to its students in Cricket, Football, Table Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball, Athletic and Chess and inter-University tournaments. Promising players are provided with special coaching facilities under eminent part-time coach.
An annual sports event is held every winter where student as well as teaching and non-teaching employees of the University participate with enthusiasm.

Rabindra Bharati University, was founded on May 8, 1962 under the Rabindra Bharati Act to mark the birth centenary of poet Rabindranath Tagore at his residential house at Calcutta for the advancement of learning and culture particularly in the branches of music, dance and drama. Assent of the President of India to the Rabindra Bharati Act passed by the Legislature of West Bengal, was first published in the Calcutta Gazette, Extra ordinary, of the 10th January, 1962. After the death of Rabindranath Tagore, the house belonging to Gaganendranath Tagore and Abanindranath Tagore on the south-west side of the main building was purchased by a private party.
Late Suresh Chandra Majumdar on behalf of Rabindra Bharati Society collected from public around Rs. 15 Lakhs and part of the money was paid to the private party to acquire the property as stated above. In the meanwhile the private party went to the High Court for enhancement of the award and the party was given additional award of Rs. 3 Lakhs by the court. As Suresh Chandra Majumdar was facing severe fund crisis, he asked the West Bengal Government to release suitable grant. An agreement was signed between the Government and Rabindra Bharati Society and as a condition of the grant, the Government was given the right to use Rabindra Bharati property for use of its proposed Dance, Drama and Music Institute. Accordingly, the Institute, namely West Bengal State Akademy of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts (present name) was established in 1955. Uday Shankar, Ahindra Chowdhury and Ramesh Banerjee were put in charge of Dance, Drama and Music respectively.
Uday Shankar subsequently left the Institute. In 1959, it was felt that the Government of West Bengal would establish a University as a memorial to Rabindranath. Since the original purpose of Rabindra Bharati Society was also the development Dance, Drama and Music, the general body of the Rabindra Bharati Society met and agreed that it should be merged with proposed university. The Government of West Bengal was further contemplating to celebrate birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore. The Government thought that the best way to perpetuate the memory of Rabindranath tagore would be to acquire the family dwellings and utilize them for the purpose of establishing a university and persuaded Rathindranath Tagore to hand over the buildings including the room where Rabindranath Tagore breathed his last.
In was also arranged that Viswa-Bharati publication division would vacate their occupied portion at "Bichitra"
