ISC: New Subjects Introduced in Classes XI and XII to Expand Career Opportunities

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE)
Curriculum expansion for Classes XI and XII, Unveiling Diverse Career Pathways

In recent years, several ICSE schools have expanded their curriculum in Classes XI and XII by introducing new subjects such as fashion designing, mass media & communication, biotechnology, and legal studies. At least three schools have implemented some of these subjects this year with the aim of providing students with more career options and promoting interdisciplinary education. While the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) offers these subjects, not all schools offer them due to a lack of interested candidates and teachers.

Some schools sought feedback from parents and students before incorporating these subjects. For example, Modern High School for Girls introduced fashion designing in Class XI, and the first batch of legal studies students appeared for ISC (Class XII) exams in 2024. Sri Sri Academy and South City International School have introduced mass media & communication, fashion designing, and legal studies in Class XI this year, with Sri Sri Academy also adding biotechnology to its curriculum. The Heritage School has been offering mass media & communication and legal studies in Class XI since last year.

Several schools have diversified subject combinations to facilitate interdisciplinary studies, aiming to prepare students for higher education. This shift away from traditional streams like science, commerce, and arts has allowed students to experiment with different subject combinations. For instance, at Modern High School for Girls, a commerce student has opted for fashion designing. Similarly, Sri Sri Academy offers new subjects across streams in Classes XI and XII.

Despite logistical challenges in timetable preparation, schools recognize the importance of offering a wider range of subjects to meet student demand and provide opportunities for liberal education. Mass media & communication, in particular, has seen high demand among students due to its practical applications. For example, Sri Sri Academy had 35 students opt for mass media and communication in its first year, while The Heritage School has over 45 mass media and communication students in Class XII this year.

Additionally, schools like Modern High have responded to students' career aspirations by introducing subjects such as legal studies, which they believe will provide students with a competitive edge, especially for exams like CLAT (common law admission test). South City International School conducted surveys to gauge student interest before introducing these subjects, demonstrating a commitment to meeting student needs and aspirations.
