  • Elective English with Elective Bengali / Economics / Sandkrit.

Apart from the above mentioned combinations, choice of subjects in certain cases in degree course would depend upon the norms as prescribed by the University of North Bengal.

Post Graduate

  • Bengali :-

    Regular M.A. In Bengali is being offered from the academic session 2003 - 2004, under the University of North Bengal. The First Batch of Students will appear for final Examination in 2005. Department of Bengali has made an example of its kind for its Teaching and Related Academic Activity.


  • English :-

    Efforts are on to open Regular M.A. Course in English at the earliest. The matter waits finalization for inspection and approval by the University.

Career Oriented Programmes

Students of this College have a unique opportunity to have dual educational qualification in single academic year. Understanding the potential excellence of this college, the U.G.C. Has sanctioned career oriented courses in three different subjects for this college only in the entire North Bengal Region. The courses are :-

  • Mass Communication and Videography :

    This Programme was started with overwhelming response from the Students. The College has undergone a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ritwik Academy, (an Institute of Film and Videography) Kolkata. Under this MoU the Ritwik Academy will provide expert to the college. At present there are 5 (five) students in this course.


  • Industrial Microbiology :

    This programme was started in the year 2004-2005. The programme has been made effective from the session 2005 - 2006.


  • Biological Specimen Preservation :

    This programme was started in the year 2004 - 2005. The Programme has been made effective from 2005 - 2006.

    Students can take the opportunity to have the dual degree in a single academic year by joining any one of these three courses along with the conventional University Curriculum. Competent faculty conducts the curriculum. There is no bar for Science, Arts or Commerce Students for these courses.

    3 Year Advanced Diploma Course.

Admission Procedure and Seat Matrix :

Application for admission is to be made in prescribed form, which is available in the college office on payment of prescribed price for General Courses and additional prescribed prices for each Honours Subjects, in cash on all working days after a notification made by the college. Selection of the Candidates for admission is made strictly on the basis of norms laid down by the Admission Committee of the College following NBU guidelines for the Under-Graduate Courses.

Reservations :-

Seats are reserved for admission of S.C., S.T., and O.B.C. Candidates as per rules framed by the State Government. Seats are also reserved for admission of the Physically Challanged candidates as per NBU rules.

Free Studentship :-

A good number of half-free studentship are made available to the meritorious but poor students. For this, every year applications are invited from the students and after judging their merit and financial conditions, students are given half-free studentship.

Facilities Available

  • »  Hostel Facilities

    There are two hostels attached to the college in the campus - "Vivekananda Chhatrabus" for the boys and "Vidyasagar Chhatrinibus" for the girls.

    The number of seats being limited, admission is restricted through a process of selection made by the Hostel Committee. Application for accommodation in the hostel is to be made at the time of admission to the college.

    Separate application forms are available at the respective Hostel Superintendent's Office during 1st Year admission.


  • »  Library Facilities

    The College has a Library with more than 41,500 volumes of text and reference books. There is a spacious reading hall attached to the library both for the Teachers and the Students. Students may borrow books against their respective Library Cards and also for reading in the Library Hall. A good number of periodicals, magazines, journals are also available at the library. Recently, the library has been connected with internet facility.

    Computerized cataloging of books and lending procedures have been initiated and are expected to be in the final form shortly. Student can access the computerized facility for availability of titles at the library at the click of the mouse.

    There is a Library Advisory Committee which looks after the proper functioning of the Library.


  • »  Games and Sports

    There is a Play Ground attached to the college where the students play various types of outdoor games, e.g., football, cricket, volleyball etc. There are provisions for indoor games like carrom and table tennis in the common rooms for the students. The Athletic Committee of the Students' Union conducts annual indoor and outdoor games and annual sports.

    The college team also participates in the inter-college games organized by the NBU Sports Board.


  • »  Cultural Activities

    Student's Union under the guidance of the teachers organizes annual cultural activities and competitions in music, debate, discussion, quiz, drama, exhibition etc, and publishes the college magazine. Science exhibition is held at college during the month of November every year with great enthusiasm. The students of Arts and Commerce faculties also exhibits their projects.


  • »  N.C.C.

    The Students have the opportunity for enrolment in the NCC. The College maintains one company of senior division NCC for the boys.

    We are proud of Smt. Soeta Sarkar, a student of BA who represented West Bengal State NCC at the Republic Day parade and the Prime Minister Rally held on 26th January at New Delhi.


  • »  N.S.S.

    Students, both boys and girls, are given the opportunity of joining the youth organization NSS (National Service Scheme) The NSS wing organizes different programmes, e.g. Literacy Drive, Health Awareness and Adult Education Programmes. On demand and popularity of NSS programmes among the students, the College Authorities has opened two units of NSS: Unit I (for Boys) and Unit II (for Girls).

Raiganj College (University College) is one of the biggest colleges in the Northern part of West Bengal. Established in 1948, the college has been taken over by North Bengal University in 1968, and since then it has become a University College and is been directly managed by the University of North Bengal.

The Campus sprawls over an area of 13.63 acres of land, which contains departments, teacher's quarters, canteen, a garden of medicinal plants and mulberry garden. The college runs both honours and general courses in undergraduate level in almost all traditional subjects and a few subjects of recent origin. The College also teaches post graduate course in Bengal.

It comes under the grant-in-aid institutional category and is recognized by UGC as per its Act 2(f) and 12(B) since 1956. The college has been taken over by the University of North Bengal in 1968 as one of its University Colleges.

The College imparts Undergraduate education in Arts, Science and Commerce. There are altogether 12 academic programme options with 15 Undergraduate Courses like English, Bengali, Sanskrit, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Economics, Geography, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Computer Science and Micro-Biology. Newly introduced courses are Computer Applications (BCA) and self-financing Post-Graduate courses in Bengali. The college also offers Ph.D. Programme at Department of Botany, Chemistry and Physics under the University of North Bengal. The Sericulture Department was set up with full financial support from UGC. The College offers Honours in as many as 15 subjects including Microbiology. The students have the option to choose any combination of three subjects in a faculty as per the regulation of the North Bengal University. English and Bengali are compulsory for all the Under-Graduate programmes. Apart from the regular programmes of its own, the College serves as a study center for Netaji Subhas Open University and also as the centers of Distance Education Programme of North Bengal University.
