Applications are invited for admission to the Ph. D. Program of the Department of Chemistry, CU.
Candidates willing to pursue their research work, leading subsequently to Ph. D. (Sc.) Degree of the University of Calcutta, should apply in the format given in the next page after paying Rs. 100/- online through SBI collect.
In this connection, a written offline MCQ Examination of 1 hour duration will be held in Room No. 37 of Palit Building, Rashbehari Shiksha Prangan (Rajabajar Campus) on May 16 (Thursday), 2024 at 12 Noon. This will be based on B. Sc.(Hons.) and M. Sc. Syllabi of this University.
Successful candidates will be called for an interview / counseling on the same day (16.05.2024) at 3 pm in the offline mode in the Department of Chemistry. The final selection will be made on the basis of the overall performance of the candidates. At present, approximately a maximum of 22 students will be taken for the Ph.D. Program.
Reservation policy shall be followed as per West Bengal Higher Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Rules, 2013.
The allocation of a supervisor for a selected student shall depend on the number of vacancies under each supervisor, the research interest of the student as indicated during the interview by the student and, finally, in consultation with the respective student and the faculty member. THIS EXAMINATION (RET) IS NOT A FELLOWSHIP GIVING EXAMINATION.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO Ph.D. PROGRAMME:
Subject to the conditions stipulated in these Regulations, the following persons are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. programme:--
Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme should have a Master’s degree or a degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body of this University, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed). A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-able candidates. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.
Candidates who have already cleared the UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examinations / NET / SET / SLET /GATE or have obtained DST INSPIRE Fellowship /Teacher fellowship or have passed equivalent examinations or passed the M.Phil./ M.Tech / M.D/ M.E./ M.Pharm or equivalent examination, need to appear only at the interview, skipping the written test.
The candidates are asked to apply addressing the Head of the Department of Chemistry, University of Calcutta and the completed application should reach the office of the Department of Chemistry on any working day between 12 noon to 3 pm, within 13th May i.e., within 10 working days from the date of advertisement. The application should contain the self attested photo copy of relevant documents along with the money receipt, with filled in application proforma on the first page.
