About College
Ananda Chandra College of Commerce located at the heart of the Jalpaiguri Divisional town started its journey in a modest way with only 54 Students from a small room of Sonaulla School in Jalpaiguri Town on 5th November, 1962 in the evening section with the constraints and uncertainties of recognition, affiliation and future existence. The then Vice Principal of Ananda Chandra College, Dr Dinesh Biswas proposed Prof Naresh Chandra Bhowmick to set up an Evening Commerce Section in Jalpaiguri town and suggested him to apply for teacher-ship for the proposed section. Prof Bhowmick had been serving at Katwa College for five years against substantive post of Lecturer. It was a tough decision for Mr Bhowmick to join an unapproved and unsanctioned post of a proposed stream which might survive or fail by resigning from an approved and confirmed post of Lecturer at Katwa College. He was in a dilemma and at last Mr. Bhowmick joined the section and took its charge on 10th December, 1962 as the Vice Principal in Charge. Gradual increasing of students created an urgent need for more class rooms and space for this Commerce Section, so the College was shifted to Ananda Chandra College building in the evening shift.
The Ananda Chandra College is situated at the outskirt of Jalpaiguri Town and during that time, the area was scarcely populated. Therefore the staff and students of the college faced many difficulties due to unavailability of transport in the evening and particularly in adverse weather. Prof. Bhowmick by that time got assured of the future and survival of Commerce Section to a great extent. He then dreamt of a separate existence and set up of its own premises within the Town so that major disadvantage would be removed. Luckily he came across such an opportunity and acquired this very college building which was known as Alima Manzil out of humble college fund, created out of the collection of tuition fees from students. The Cost of the Building was Rs.1, 50,000 (one lakh fifty thousand). It was a rare event in the past that a college was set up without any donation or charity or gift of land from anywhere. It was Prof. Naresh Chandra Bhowmick who took all such initiatives that created a full-fledged commerce college and vowed to spread Commerce education in the wide area of Jalpaiguri and the adjoining districts and states in the Northern region of West Bengal. Some noted personalities and educationists of the area provided active and generous supports in his endeavours. All his colleagues both the teaching and non-teaching were fully inspired and motivated and collectively extended their fullest cooperation in building such a mammoth task from the zero level. Students were his inspiration that led him courageous in the mammoth creation of a Social Asset. His uncommon and unparallel personalities stood before the students and staff as a friend, philosopher and guide in this academic development process as well as solving personal or family matters. Within a very short period the College under the vibrant leadership of Prof. Bhowmick created a niche in the University, acquiring top places in the University Examinations by his students successively. After acquiring own Building he thought of a separate identity apart from Ananda Chandra College. The NBU, on application and personal persuasion granted affiliation on 9th September, 1969. On this day the College each year celebrates its Foundation Day. On 1st January 1970 Mr Bhowmick assumed as the full fledged Principal of Ananda Chandra College of Commerce in its new premises at the D B C Road. He served the College till his death on 9th day of February, 1991.
Setting up of Ananda Chandra College of Commerce is a philanthropic and heroic deed on the part of Prof. Naresh Chandra Bhowmick, for the spread of education after independence without donation and charity of any King or Zaminder or Landlord or Government. The College will commemorate such an endeavour of him forever.
