Courses Offered
The College offers three-years honours courses and three-years general courses under B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.B.A., and B.C.A. faculties. The Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) and Bachelor of Computer Application (B.C.A.) courses are offered as three-year (six semester) degree courses. M.A. English course is offered as a two-year Post Graduate course affiliated to the North Bengal University

Career Oriented Programmes
Along with B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.B.A., and B.C.A., a student must take up at least one of the following certificate/diploma/advanced/diploma courses affiliated to North Bengal University: 1. Mass Communication and Journalism 2. Banking Management 3. Biotechnology.

Examination System
All the B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., students have to pass the University exams held at the end of each year to get their degree. However during the year tests and examinations will be held, on the basis of which candidates will be selected to write the University exam. A minimum of 75% attendance is also required to sit for the University exams. M.A., B.B.A., and B.C.A., students will have two semester examinations every year and the students will be selected on the basis of the internal tests, Selection Exam and attendance.

Subjects for B.A. (General) examinations

Major Indian languages: Nepali/Hindi/Bengali/Alternative English. Besides this, the General candidates must choose three different electives, one from each of the following groups. However, the selection of elective subjects will be regulated by the staff while submitting forms and during admission.

Group A : History, Mathematics, and Mass Communication & Journalism
Group B : Economics, Sociology
Group C : Political Science, Elective Language (English/Nepali/Hindi/Tibetan) (Tibetan is offered as a self-taught course)

Subjects for B.A. Part II and Part III Examinations will be the same as offered in Part I and English (compulsory) in Part II and EVS in Part III

Subjects for B.A. (Honours) examinations

Honours Courses Available in B.A. : English, Nepali, Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology and Mass Communication and Journalism.

Major Indian Language: Nepali/Hindi/Bengali/Alternative English. Besides this, the Honours candidates must choose any two different elective subjects (from the three Groups given below); they cannot take the honours subject as an elective subject.

In 1927, St. Joseph's College Section offering basically the Intermediate Courses was affiliated to the Calcutta University. By 1949 the college was fully accredited to give courses in B.A. and B.Sc. Later, in 1962 with the establishment of the University of North Bengal the college was affiliated to the university. In 1963 the college moved out of the school premises into the present site the college is now in the 82nd year of its service.

In 1927, there were only ten students in our college! Today the student strength is 1764 of which nearly 50 % are girls. There are 47 permanent teaching staff of whom 17 are Ph.D holders, 4 have M.Phil degrees and 5 are on the way of getting their doctorates. The 10 technical staff and 17 administrative staff wholeheartedly support various departments and students' requirements.

The college offers the following courses: Honours in English, Nepali, Political Science, Economics, History, Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Accountancy, M.A. in English is partly self-financed. B.Sc Microbiology (Honours), B.Sc Computer Science (Honours and General), Bachelor of Computer Applications (B.C.A.), Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) and B.A. Mass Communication and Journalism (Honours and General) are offered as self-financed courses. Besides these the college offers eleven different Career Oriented Programmes as add on courses.
