Admissions to the Bachelor of Design (BDes) programmes at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad and IIITDM Jabalpur are done through the Under Graduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED). Students who have passed Class XII (or equivalent) in 2023, or appearing in 2024, in ANY STREAM (Science, Commerce, or Arts & Humanities) are eligible to appear for UCEED 2024.

    + Eligibility Criteria for appearing for the Exam

    A candidate, including a foreign national, must simultaneously fulfil each and every one of the following three criteria to appear in UCEED 2024.

    Criterion 1 – Age limit:
    The candidate should have been born on or after October 1, 1999 if belonging to the OPEN/EWS/OBC-NCL category and born on or after October 1, 1994 if belonging to the SC, ST or PwD category.

    Criterion 2 – Number of attempts:
    A candidate can attempt UCEED for a maximum of two times and that too in consecutive years. Note that UCEED score is valid for one year, and only for admissions in the same corresponding academic year.

    Criterion 3 – Qualifying examination:
    The candidate should have passed in all subjects in the qualifying examination (Class XII or equivalent) in 2023, OR should be appearing for the qualifying examination for the first time in 2024 in order to be eligible for attempting UCEED 2024. Students from ALL STREAMS (Science, Commerce, and Arts & Humanities) are eligible.

    Those who appeared for the first time in their qualifying examination (Class XII) in 2022 or earlier are NOT eligible to appear in UCEED 2024.

    + Exam Cities

    UCEED 2024 will be held in the following 27 cities in India only:

    Candidates should compulsorily opt for THREE cities of their choice, in the order of preference, at the time of online registration. Once the registration is complete, request for change of city will NOT be entertained.

    If a sufficient number of candidates are not available in a listed city, then that city may be dropped from the final list, and those candidates will be allotted a centre in the city of either their second or third preference. Additionally, because of operational contingencies, the UCI Committee reserves the right to add a new city/town or remove an existing one and allot a city/town that may not be among any of the preferences stated by a candidate.

    Candidates must make their own arrangements for appearing at the allotted centre.

    Note:
    A request for change of examination centre will NOT be entertained after the registration is complete.

    + Syllabus

    UCEED 2024 will have two parts.

    Part-A will have questions from the following topics:
    • Visualization and spatial reasoning: Ability to visualise and transform 2D shapes and 3D objects and their spatial relationships.
    • Practical and scientific knowledge: Know-how of scientific principles and everyday objects.
    • Observation and design sensitivity: The capacity to detect concealed properties in daily life and think critically about them. Attention to detail, classification, analysis, inference and prediction.
    • Environment and society: General awareness of environmental, social and cultural connections with design.
    • Analytical and logical reasoning: Ability to analyse qualitative and quantitative information.
    • Language: Proficiency in reading and comprehending Standard English.
    • Creativity: Grasp of verbal and non-verbal analogies, metaphors, signs and symbols.

    Part-B will have questions on the following topics:
    • Drawing: Ability to draw products, people or scenes in proportion with good line quality, composition, proportion, perspective and shading.
    • Design aptitude: Capability to practically and appropriately respond to problems/situations with ingenuity and empathy.

    Note:
    The topics listed above are exhaustive and indicative of the nature of the questions. However, the UCEED 2024 may not cover all the topics.

    + Question Paper Structure for UCEED 2024

    • There will be ONE question paper of total THREE hours duration.
    • The question paper will be in English only.
    • The question paper will carry a total of 300 marks.
    • The question paper will consist of two parts: Part-A and Part-B. It is compulsory to attempt questions from both the parts.
    • Utmost care is taken to prepare an error free question paper. However, if an error is detected in the question paper, the UCI Committee shall take an appropriate decision after the examination, which shall be final.

    Details of the two parts of the question paper are given below:
    Part-A (Total marks: 200; Maximum time: 2 hours)
    • This part will be administered through a computer-based test.
    • This part will consist of three sections.

    Section 1: NAT (Numerical Answer Type): 14 questions (4 marks each; no negative marks).
    For these questions, the answer is a number that needs to be entered using a virtual keyboard on the computer screen. No choices will be shown for these questions.

    Section 2: MSQ (Multiple Select Question): 15 questions.
    Each MSQ may have one or more than one correct choice(s) out of the four given. The following is the marking scheme:
    • Full Marks: + 4 If only (all) the correct option(s) is(are) chosen and NONE of the incorrect options is chosen.
    • Partial Marks: + 3 If all the four options are correct but ONLY three options are chosen and NONE of the incorrect options is chosen.
    • Partial Marks: + 2 If three or more options are correct but ONLY two options are chosen, both of which are correct and NONE of the incorrect options is chosen.
    • Partial Marks: + 1 If two or more options are correct but ONLY one option is chosen and it is a correct option and NONE of the incorrect options is chosen.
    • Zero Marks: 0 If none of the options is chosen (i.e., the question is unanswered).
    • Negative Marks: -1 In all other cases.

    Section 3: MCQ (Multiple Choice Question): 28 questions (3 marks each for the correct answer; 0.71 negative marks for incorrect answers). Each MCQ will have four choices, out of which only one is the correct answer.

    Part-B (Total marks: 100; Maximum time: 1 hour)
    • Part-B consists of TWO questions to test the candidates' drawing skills and design aptitude. This will require subjective evaluation. The questions in Part-B will be displayed on the computer screen, and the answer must be written/drawn in the answer book provided by the invigilator. In the case of PwD candidates availing the use of a scribe, assistance in attempting Part-B is not permitted, as the question is aimed at evaluating their drawing skill.
    • Part-B answer booklets will be collected at the end of the examination.
    • Part-B question is mandatory.
    • The entire paper (Part-A and Part-B) must be finished within the stipulated time for each part.

    Sample Exam Interface:
    To provide a feel of the examination interface a link to a sample/practice exam is given below.
    • The interface is designed and optimised to run on a desktop browser. It may not work on tablet or other mobile devices.
    • The login details are already filled in. To begin, click on the "Sign In" button and follow the instructions.
    • On the sample interface, the candidate can check how to answer a question, how to go to the next question, how to mark a question for reviewing later, etc.
    • To see Part-B of the sample/practice exam, the candidate must wait for 30 minutes.

    + Admit Card

    • Candidate whose registration is complete in all aspects will be able to download the Admit Card for UCEED 2024 from the Candidate Portal from the date specified below.
    • The Admit Card will bear the following details of the candidate: Name, UCEED Registration ID, Roll Number for UCEED 2024, Date of Birth, Category, photograph, signature, examination schedule, examination centre details and instructions to candidates.
    • Candidates should carefully examine ALL the entries in the Admit Card and in case of any discrepancy, contact the UCEED Office at IIT Bombay BEFORE the below mentioned date via the designated email address uceed@iitb.ac.in.
    • In case the Admit Card is not available for downloading, the candidate should contact the UCEED Office at IIT Bombay immediately via email or phone [see contact information below].
    • A printed copy of the downloaded Admit Card MUST be produced at the time of examination.

    + Exam Day

    • Exam date and time: 21 January 2024, 9.00 am – 12.00 noon.
    • Reporting time: Candidates should report at the examination centre (as allotted in the admit card) at 7:00 am on Sunday, January 21, 2024, with a printout of the Admit Card and a Valid, Original Photo Identity Proof. This is required to record the biometric information (thumb impression and photograph) before appearing for the examination.
    • Only candidates having a valid Admit Card and a Photo Identity Proof will be allowed inside the examination centre.
    • The identity of the candidates will be verified by invigilators as well as IIT representatives. If the identity of any candidate is in doubt, the candidate may not be allowed to appear for the examination. However, at their discretion, the authorities may permit the candidate to appear for the examination after completing certain formalities. No extra time will be allowed to complete the examination instead of the time taken to complete these formalities. If candidates with doubtful identities are permitted to appear, their candidature shall be subject to the decision of UCI Committee, which shall be final and binding.
    • Impersonation and/or use of any unfair means in the examination is a serious offence which will result in immediate disqualification of the candidate from UCEED, and lead to criminal proceedings against the candidate.
    • Candidates will NOT be allowed to carry any electronic devices (mobile phones, smart phones, digital/smart watches, calculators, tablets and the like), abacus, slide rule, log books, study material of any type, geometry box, and so on to the examination hall. A list of forbidden items will be put-up on the website before the exam, if there are additional items.
    • Stationery: Candidates must bring their own drawing material like pens, pencils, sketch pens and colours for the examination. Candidates should NOT bring drawing sheets to the examination hall.
    • Candidate has to remain in the examination hall for the entire duration of the examination.
    • Part-A of the examination is a computer-based test. In the event of any technical problems, the candidate may approach the invigilator for assistance and steps will be immediately taken to remedy the problem, or assign a different computer terminal if required. Candidates will get the complete allotted time to attempt their paper even in the event of any technical problem, and the time lost due to technical problems shall be adjusted automatically in the server.
    • Further instructions, if any, including those pertaining to COVID-19, shall be put-up on the website before the exam.

    + Results

    • Results will be declared on March 08, 2024.
    • UCEED results will be available only on the official website (www.uceed.iitb.ac.in). Candidates will need to use their user login and password (created during registration process) for viewing the results on the webpage.
    • All candidates who appeared in UCEED 2024 will be able to download their Score Card from March 11, 2024 to June 12, 2024 from the official UCEED 2024 website.
    • All shortlisted candidates will get a common merit rank (All India Rank). All shortlisted candidates are considered as qualified candidates in UCEED 2024.
    • Obtaining a rank in UCEED 2024 does NOT guarantee admission to the BDes programme. Hard copy of the UCEED Score Card will not be available and hence, will NOT be sent to the qualified candidates either by post or by email.
    • The responses of the candidates for Part-A of UCEED 2024 will be available for download ONLY until the declaration of the UCEED result. Downloading of Part-A responses will be DISABLED once the UCEED results are declared. No further requests will be entertained in this regard.

    Rank Lists
    • All shortlisted candidates will get a rank. All shortlisted candidates are considered as qualified candidates in UCEED 2024. For details on shortlisting criteria, see EVALUATION section of the Information Brochure.
    • Rank list will be prepared based on the total marks (Part-A marks and Part-B marks combined) in UCEED 2024.
    • If the total marks scored by two or more candidates are same, then the following tie-break policy will be used for awarding ranks:
      1. Higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in Part-B.
      2. If the criterion given in (i) does not break the tie, higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in Section 2 of Part-A.
      3. If the criteria (i) and (ii) do not break the tie, higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in Section 1 of Part-A.
      4. If there is a tie even after this, the candidates will be assigned same rank.

Admission

    + B.Des. Application

    Only UCEED 2024 qualified students can apply for admission to the BDes programme at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad and IIITDM Jabalpur for the academic year 2024-2025. There will be a common application form for admissions to respective BDes programmes. The UCEED Office, IIT Bombay will process the common application form and conduct the joint seat allocation process.

    B.Des. Application
    • The common application form will be available through the IIT Bombay Admissions Portal. Applicants will be able to fill in their personal particulars and select institutes of their choice by indicating the order of preference.
    • The application can be submitted after paying the application processing fee, uploading digital copies of relevant supporting documents, and uploading the signed copy of the completed application form (first page only). Detailed instructions on each step of the application process are provided within the online application form.

    Application Fee
    The BDes admission application counselling processing fee for applicants of all categories and genders is Rs. 4000 (Rupees Four Thousand only). This fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

    + Eligibility Criteria for applying for B.Des.

    To apply for admission to the BDes programmes of the participating institutes, i.e., IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, and IIITDM Jabalpur, an applicant is required to fulfil ALL the following three criteria simultaneously.

    Criterion 1 – Age limit:
    The candidate should have been born on or after October 1, 1999 if belonging to the OPEN/EWS/OBC-NCL category and, on or after October 1, 1994 if belonging to the SC, ST or PwD category.

    Criterion 2 – UCEED qualification:
    The candidate should have qualified, i.e., obtained a rank, in UCEED 2024.

    Criterion 3 – Qualifying examination:
    The candidate should have passed in all five subjects in the qualifying examination (Class XII or equivalent) in 2023 or 2024. Those who appeared for the first time in their qualifying examination in 2022 or earlier are NOT eligible.

    Candidates from the Science Stream with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects are eligible to apply to all the five participating institutes (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, and IIITDM Jabalpur). Candidates from any other stream (Science without Mathematics or Physics or Chemistry, Commerce, and Arts & Humanities) are eligible to apply to IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Hyderabad. For admission to BDes at IIITDM Jabalpur, only students with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology at 10+2 can apply. Students from Arts or Humanities at 10+2 are not eligible to apply for BDes admissions at IIITDM Jabalpur. Candidates from the Science Stream with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects are eligible to apply to IIT Guwahati. Candidates from any other stream (Science without Mathematics or Physics or Chemistry, Commerce, and Arts & Humanities) are NOT eligible to apply to IIT Guwahati.

    The candidates appearing for their qualifying examination (Class XII or equivalent) in 2024 should ensure that, (a) all parts of their final examination are completed by the date of application for admission, and (b) proof of having passed the qualifying examination with required eligibility is submitted by September 30, 2024 to the admitting institute.

    If a qualifying Examination Board awards only letter grades without providing information on the passing grade on the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying the passing grade and upload it along with the grade sheet. In case such a certificate is not provided, the decision taken by the UCI Committee will be final.

    The criteria, as specified above, are applicable “in toto” to all the applicants, including foreign nationals. Seats allotted to foreign nationals are supernumerary, with a cap of 10% of the total seats in a program. Applications from foreign nationals holding OCI/PIO cards issued ON or BEFORE 4 th March 2021 are only considered under the OPEN category. They are outside the ambit of seat reservation under the EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, and ST categories.

    + Seat Allotment

    Three rounds of seat allocation will be conducted. However, once the seats are filled, the seat allocation will be closed. Seat will be provisionally allotted based on the applicant’s All India Rank (AIR) in UCEED 2024, category, and choice of institutes. Selected candidates will be sent provisional allotment letters via their registered email, and will be directed to an online payment system to remit the Seat Acceptance Fee of Rs. 60,000 (Rupees Sixty Thousand only) for GEN/EWS/OBC-NCL and Rs. 15,000/- (Rupees Fifteen Thousand only) for SC/ST/PwD.

    PwD reservation is 5% horizontal. The PwD seats are carved from the respective birth category. The unfilled seats will return to the original category.

    Note:
    During the counselling process, e-mail or phone queries regarding the status of vacant seats at various institutes will NOT be entertained. All the information regarding seat allotment shall be published on the official UCEED 2023 website, as per the schedule.

    + B.Des. Fee Structure
