Direct Admission of Students Abroad

Admission to Undergraduate Courses :

  • Admission to NIT, Durgapur for all the courses will be made in accordance with the instructions received from the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India from time to time. Seats are reserved for candidates belonging to OBC, Schedule caste, schedule tribes and physically handicapped candidates as per the guidelines issued by MHRD.
  • Admission to all courses will be made in the odd/autumn Semester of each session at the first year level through a Entrance Examination as decided by MHRD. All the candidates having rank in AIEEE and must pass 10+2 Examination or equivalent, with pass marks in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English separately. The age Criterion will be as per the directive issued by MHRD from time to time.
  • Besides the allotted seats to be filled up by AIEEE of MHRD, a specified no of foreign nationals or NRI (Non resident Indian), and Indians living abroad selected with the policy laid down by Govt. of India may be admitted directly to the 1st year of any of the courses covered by this regulation.
  • All the students admitted to any of the courses above shall be required to pay, at the time of joining , and also in subsequent semesters prevalent tuition and other compulsory fees as prescribed by the Institution till they are on roll.
  • The Institution reserves the right to cancel the admission of any student and ask him/her to discontinue his/her studies at any stage of his/her career on the grounds of unsatisfactory academic performance, irregular attendance in the classes or indiscipline.
  • The Institution may admit students to a programme on transfer from other NITs. Under specific instruction from MHRD, Govt. of India such admission may be made at any level considered appropriate. However, no student will be permitted transfer during first semester.
  • If, at any time after admission, it is found that a candidate has not fulfilled all the requirements stipulated in the offer of admission, the Dean of Academic Affairs may revoke the admission of the candidate and report the matter to the Senate.
  • Decision of the Director of the Institute regarding the admission of student is final and binding.

Admission to Postgraduate Courses :

General Admission Procedure for M.Tech. & M.Sc. Peogrammes

  • M.Tech.
    • GATE-qualified candidates with stipend:
      Admission for GATE-qualified candidates is made through centralized e-counselling, CCMT. Visit www.ccmt.in for details.
    • Part-time, sponsored and self-sponsored candidates (without stipend):
      Admission is made through admission test and viva voce conducted by different departments in NIT Durgapur. The Admission notice is published in April-May on the Institute website www.nitdgp.ac.in. The application form may be downloaded from the website. Both GATE and non-GATE candidates shall be considered for self-sponsed categorory.

      Admission procedure:
      • The selection is based on 30% weightage on Percentage of Marks / CGPA obtained in the last qualifying examination, 30% weightage on written Admission Test, and 40% weightage on viva-voce in respective departments at NIT Durgapur. A screening may be made after the written test and the list of candidates to appear for viva voce will be published by the respective departments.
      • Sponsored candidates must have a minimum of two years full-time work experience in a registered Firm/ Company /Industry /Educational or Research Institutions/ any Government Autonomous Organizations in the relevant field in which admission is being sought. A letter from the employer must be furnished along with the application stating that the candidate is being sponsored to get admission. The Employer should also indicate that the candidate will not be withdrawn midway till the completion of the programme and will not claim for a job through Campus interview at NIT Durgapur.
      • Employed candidates may apply for admission to Part-time M Tech programmes. A No-Objection Certificate from the Employer is essential for admission to M. Tech. programme for a part-time candidate and their working place must be within 30 km from NIT, Durgapur.
  • M.Sc.

    The selection for M. Sc. programme in Physics/ Chemistry/Mathematics with Computer Applications shall be made through a centralized e-counselling CCMN based on IIT JAM score.

  • M.B.A.

    The Institute offers three-year (six-semester) full-time programme in Master of Business Administration (MBA).

  • M.C.A.

    The Institute offers three-year (six-semester) full-time programme in Master of Computer Application (MCA). Admission to MCA programme is made through NIT MCA COMMON ENTRANCE TEST (NIMCET). Visit the NIMCET website for details.


Admission to Ph.D. Courses :

Eligibility for Admission:

The minimum qualification required for admission to PhD programme is one of the following:

  • M. Tech./ M.E./ M. Arch/ M. Pharm in relevant discipline with at least 6.5 CGPA or 60 percent marks in aggregate in the M.E./ M. Tech. level from a recognized technical institute or university/ government open university
  • B. Tech/ B.E./ MCA/ B. Arch/ B. Pharm in relevant discipline with at least 7.5 CGPA or 70 percent marks in aggregate from a recognized technical institute or university/ government open university
  • M. Sc./ M. Com./ MBA/ PGDBM/ PGDM/ MA/ MBBS/ BDS in relevant discipline with at least 6.0 CGPA or 55 percent marks or equivalent in aggregate from a recognized institute or university/ government open university
  • CA/ ICWAI/ CS with a graduation degree in any discipline with at least 55 percent marks or equivalent in aggregate.
  • The minimum CGPA/marks shall be relaxed by 0.5 CGPA or 5 percent in case of candidates belonging to the SC/ST categories
  • To be considered for Full-time Institute-sponsored research scholar (category-A), a valid GATE score/ NET qualification as per MHRD norm for eligibility of fellowship is mandatory for candidates not having M. Tech./ M. E. degree
  • Scholars under categories E and G must submit a no-objection certificate from the Institute/PI of the project respectively during admission. They shall work for the PhD programme while discharging their normal duties
  • Part-time Sponsored research scholars (category H) may carry out their research work in their parent organization after fulfilling the pre-requisites in the Institute. They shall submit a no-objection certificate from the employer during admission
  • Candidates in categories J & K shall be considered only from foreign institution/organization having MoU with NIT Durgapur.
  • Mere possession of required degree and a good academic record do not guarantee admission to a candidate for the Ph.D. programme. Apart from academic record, the DRPC will take into consideration the research aptitude, ability to work in a team, subject interest, availability of supervisors, facilities in the department and the research focus of the department while selecting candidates to the Ph.D. programme.

Admission procedure:

  • Scholars under categories B, C, E and G shall be directly admitted, subject to fulfillment of eligibility criteria and submission of requisite documents and no-objection certificate, if applicable. Admission procedure for candidates under category D will be made as per guidelines of respective schemes.
  • Admission of scholars under categories F, H, I, J and K shall be made once in each semester with admission notices published usually in December/January and June/July. Dean (R&C) will publish the admission notice on the Institute website. The departments will receive the applications, screen these and publish the shortlists on the website. They will conduct admission tests and viva voce, select the candidates on the basis of overall academic performance, written test and viva voce and send the list of selected candidates to the office of Dean (R&C). Dean (R & C) shall publish the selection list on the Institute website. One expert from other department, selected from a panel of experts nominated by Director, will act as an observer in the viva voce.
  • Full-time Institute-sponsored research scholars (category A): Admission for category A Scholars shall be notified once in a year through Institute website and advertisement indicating the total number of seats available.
    • Applications of candidates shall be received by the office of Dean (R&C) and forwarded to the departments for screening. Dean (R&C) shall publish the short-list of the candidates screened by the departments on the Institute website along with the date, time and venue of the admission test and/or viva voce. A research scholar already registered for PhD programme in another category is also eligible to apply. However, if selected, he/she shall opt either to start the research programme afresh under the supervisor allocated by the department or to continue in the previous category of research scholar.
    • All eligible shortlisted candidates will take an admission test in the department, followed by a screening. The screened-in candidates will appear for viva voce in the department who will prepare a list of successful and waitlisted candidates and forward it to the Central Admission Committee (CAC). One expert from other department, selected from a panel of experts nominated by Director, will act as an observer in the viva voce.
    • The CAC shall prepare the final list of the selected candidates in a meeting.
    • Dean (R & C) shall publish the selection list on the Institute website. All communication related to the admission procedure shall be made through the Institute website www.nitdgp.ac.in. only. Regular reservation policy of the Government of India shall apply.
    • All selected research scholars shall submit an undertaking that he/she would abide by all rules and regulations and codes of conduct of the Institute.
    • Respective departments shall be responsible for the merit lists prepared by them.

Admission to Direct Admission of Students Abroad

Eligibility criteria of UG Programme in Engineering / Architecture

Age

Only applicants born on or after October 01, 1990 are eligible. Date of birth as recorded in the Secondary Education Board / University Certificate [Class X or equivalent] or any certificate issued by the Government authorities only will be taken as authentic.


Academic Eligibility

Applicant must have passed the qualifying examination, i.e. Senior Secondary [10+2] or equivalent from any system of education as recognized by the Association of Indian Universities(www.aiuweb.org).
AND

Applicant should have completed successfully Mathematics, Physics and one of the subjects from (Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Biology) in 11thAND / OR 12th, as applicable in the respective boards.
AND

Applicant must have secured a minimum of at least 60% aggregate marks (average of all subjects of qualifying examination taken together) or 6.50 CGPA (on a 10 point scale) or equivalent in the qualifying examination. In case, CGPA on a different scale is awarded OR if only grades are awarded, percentage/CGPA equivalence provided by the principal examination authorities will only be considered. Applicants appearing for the qualifying examination with the above-mentioned subjects in the academic year 2015-16 and expecting their final results latest by September 15, 2015 may also apply.
AND

Applicant should have a minimum total valid score of 1440 in SAT Subject Tests (Subjects: Mathematics Level 2, Physics and Chemistry).


Residential Requirement

Applicants must be Foreign Nationals/Persons of Indian Origin/Overseas Citizen of India who have completed the qualifying examination in any country (including India)
OR

Indian Nationals studying abroad.

In case of Indian Nationals, they must have completed the 11th and 12th standard or equivalent from outside India.


Eligibility criteria of PG Programme in Engineering / Architecture / Management

Academic Eligibility

Applicants must have passed the qualifying examination i.e. Four/Five year undergraduate programme in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in relevant discipline for M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan./M.Des./MURP and an appropriate UG degree for MBA programme from any system of education recognized as equivalent by the Association of Indian Universities (www.aiuweb.org) / UGC (www.ugc.ac.in) / AICTE (www.aicte-india.org) / other statutory bodies as applicable.
AND

Must have secured a minimum of at least 60% aggregate marks or 6.50 CGPA on a 10 point scale or equivalent in the qualifying examination.
AND

Must have a valid minimum total of 300 GRE Revised General Test Score (Verbal + Quantitative) (GRE General tests taken on or after August 01, 2011) for eligibility for M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan./M.Des. and minimum of 480 GMAT Test Score for MBA programme. If GRE was taken prior to August 01, 2011 a valid minimum score of 1200 (Verbal + Quantitative) is required.


Residential Requirement

Library

The Library as one of the important central facilities of the Institute supports the study, teaching, research and development programmes of the Institute. It is housed in a separate building having three floors on a plinth area of 1000sq. mtrs. The library has a collection of 1.2 lac volumes which includes Text Books, Reference Books & Bound vols. of Journals, Standards etc. The Library subscribes to about 180 current Journals. Library operations have been automated with the help of an integrated library software package, LIBSYS-4. The book database is accessible through OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue). Circulation Services are executed through Barcode System. It has a good collection of Electronic resources in its Digital Library. It is an open access library and remains open from 8:30a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Library has introduced wi-fi Internet facility inside it to facilitate free-flow of information to the users.

Library has a well-equipped Xerox facility. The users can avail of this facility on payment of a nominal charge. It has also some Audio-Visual equipment like Colour TVs, VCPs, Video-Camera, Direct Projectors, and Multimedia Projectors etc. It has also a good IT infrastructure.

The library is an institutional member of DELNET (Developing Library Network), American Center Library, Kolkata, NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning), and Current Science Association, Bangalore. It is also a beneficiary Member of INDEST-AICTE (Indian National Digital Library in Engineering, Science & Technology) Consortium, which provides Desktop Access to high quality e-resources (online journals) like IEL Online (IEEE/IEE Electronic Library), Springer Verlag’s Link, Proquest, ACM journals, ASCE, ASME, Nature Magazine, Indian Standards (Intranet version)and ASTM journals & Standards etc. It has a good collection of Learning Resources. It has also a collection of several thousand E-Books on Computer Science (Published by Springer) available through our website.

Computer Centre

The ‘Computer Centre’ provides central computing facilities for the students, scholars and the teachers of the whole Institute and also offers M.Tech. on ‘High Performance Computing’ and Ph.D. on 'Computer Science'.

The Centre started as a server room in year 1986 to handle NIT Durgapur campus network. On November 11, 2002 additionally started working with new building as a central computing facility for the students, scholars, and the teachers of the whole Institute. In year 2014, started academic programs M.Tech. and Ph.D.

The research specialisations are digital image processing, image compression, quality of images, color image processing, load forecasting, bio-informatics, software engineering and agent based computing. The department maintains research environment with the dedicated and knowledgeable faculties and the well equipped laboratories with updated computing systems.

The Centre has necessary infrastructure like sufficient number of computer hardware, software, air-conditioned labs, and stabilized uninterrupted power supply. All these infrastructure are maintained by trained technical team members.

The department has laboratories with a sizeable number of PCs and workstations running specialised engineering and scientific packages, like MATLAB, AUTOCad, STADD, IDEAS, PSpice, ANSYS, AFS, Sybase and PowerBuilder etc.

Central Instruments Facilities

XRD Equipment :
PANalytical XPert Pro Basic X-ray Powder Diffraction Package with all accessories and soft wares. Offers Defect studies of Metallic Alloys including Rietveld Analsis, Phase Analysis, Chemical Analysis for both inorganic and organic specimen, Microstructural Parameters. Compatible for samples of solid flat specimens, solid powders, liquid specimen, thin films etc.

SEM with EDS Equipment :
SEM: S-3000N, HITACHI-JAPAN, EDS : THERMO-NORAN-USA, SIX-NSS 200 with PC Monitor, Softwares etc. Offers morphological and surface studies of Metallic Alloys, semi-conducting, insulating and biological samples. Chemical analysis, Phase analysis, X-ray mapping etc. on the EDS.

High Voltage Laboratories

At present more than Eight hundred colleges provide engineering education in India . Approximately three hundred of them offer undergraduate programs in Electrical and Electronic Engineering that include High Voltage Engineering. It is mandatory as per the guidelines of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) that the laboratory facilities are to be provided for the programs which are offered by the colleges. However, very few colleges have high voltage and High Power Laboratory facilities due to the involvement of huge costs and availability of specialised faculty members as well as skilled staffs in the field of High voltage and High Power Engineering. The High Voltage Laboratory is a graduate research and undergraduate teaching laboratory with the following infrastructure and testing facilities:

Accomodation

National Institute of Technology, Durgapur is a residential Institute. There are seven hostels for boys and two hostels for girls to accommodate the admitted students. A canteen for the students and the staff is located near the main academic building and there is a second canteen at the rear exit of the main academic building of the Institute.

The most of the teachers and the staff members reside in the residential quarters provided by the Institute. A modern Guest House beside the Director's Bungalow extends hospitality to the guests of the Institute. In the middle of the residential area there is a Shopping Complex which meets the daily requirement of the residents.

A model co-educational higher secondary school has been set up for the wards of the employees of the Institute. Also there is a branch of State Bank of India, a branch of Canara Bank and a Post-Office within the Institute Campus.

Guest House

The Institute Guest House standing beside the Director's Bungalow serves to render hospitality to the Official and Non-official guests of the Institute. It is a unique double storied building with modern living facilities overlooking a beautiful garden and tall sal trees all around. The guests of faculty members and students are also accommodated there with advanced booking as per availability.

Health Care

There is a Medical Unit-cum-Hospital with arrangement for both indoor and outdoor treatment of the patients. The medical unit is served by two resident doctors and other medical staff round the clock. The students and the staff with their family members are benefited by the services of the Medical Unit. For any specialised treatment the patients are referred to the State Government Hospital situated at the other end of the city, or some Advanced Medical Centre.

Recreation

There are many facilities for the students to engage themselves in extra-curricular activities. Sports and cultural activities have become part and parcel of the campus life.The Institute has a full fledged Physical Training Department for the students. Students are trained in various sports and games by well experienced and qualified coaches arranged by the Department of Physical Training.

The Institute playgrounds (Oval & Lords) are always bubbling with outdoor activities like Cricket, Football, Hockey etc. There are courts for Volleyball and Basketball. Besides the indoor game facilities available in the student's hostels, there stands a beautiful architectural Student Activity Centre, housed in which are an Indoor Auditorium and a Gymnasium with latest equipments.

The Auditorium provides Table-tennis and Badminton facilities. Every year, inter-college Cricket and Football Tournaments are organized in the Institute. The students of the Institute also participate in various sports and games competitions elsewhere to represent the Institute. The students run many hobby clubs like Photography club, Music club, Science club, Debate club and Fine Arts club. The competitions on debate, music etc. are organised departmentwise, hostelwise and Institute as a whole. The Institute organises its annual cultural festival ‘RECSTACY’ every year and various inter-college cultural competitions are also organised.

The students bring out a Institute Magazine annually where they publish literary and technical articles. To motivate the students in social services, the Institute has a unit of National Service Scheme (NSS). The students of this unit render social services in the nearby rural areas.

National Institute of Technology

The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (formerly Regional Engineering College, Durgapur), was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace setter for engineering education in the country and to foster national integration.It is a fully-funded premier Technological Institution of the Government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. The Institute is a University which awards B.Tech., M.C.A., M.Sc., M.B.A.,M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees to students after their successful completion of the specified courses. The Institute imparts education in the disciplines of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering,Information Technology, Biotechnology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Environmental science, Materials Science and Management Studies. As decided by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, the procedure for selection of candidates for admission to the Bachelor Degree Courses in Engineering/Technology in National Institute of Technology Durgapur and in other NITs is on the basis of State Rank/ All India Rank (AIR) of AIEEE conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, and the same is executed through counselling by Central Counselling Board, AIEEE under guidance from MHRD, GOI as per schedule notified by CCB. In addition to the normal intake, a few seats are reserved for Foreign Students who are nominated by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Government of India.

Administation

The highest body in the administrative setup of the Institute is the Board of Governors which is headed by the eminent scientist and educationist Prof. Bikash Sinha, the former Director of VECC and Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics. The Board has representatives from the State and Central Governments, the University, All India Council of Technical Education, Indian Institute of Technology, the Industry and the Faculty of the Institute. The Director is the Head of Administration in the Institute.

Location

The Institute is located about 160 KMs north-west of Kolkata on the Howrah-Delhi Main Railway-Route and overlooking the National Highway No. 2(the great Grand- Trunk Road). The Institute spreads over an area of 187 acres of land. It is fully residential and co-educational. At present about 2500 boys and 500 girls reside in seven boys' hostels and two girls' hostels. The annual undergraduate intake is more than 1000 students.
