Important Dates

Candidates may prepare their travel plan as per the "Important Dates Section" and book the travel tickets well in advance in order to avoid disappointment in losing an opportunity to appear in the selection process.

    + Eligibility Criteria

    • The following are eligibility criteria for admission to the Ph.D. programme:
      • A 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8- semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55 percent marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorised by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution. A relaxation of 5 per cent marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/ Differently- Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates. Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75 per cent marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5 per cent marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates. Candidates admitted after a 1 year/2 semester master’s degree after a 4-year bachelor's degree will be required to undergo a one year course work on general and specific research methodology.
      • Candidates who have completed the MPhil programme with at least 55 per cent marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorised by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme. A relaxation of 5 per cent marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates.
      • A pass in the Entrance Test and Interview conducted by CHRIST (Deemed to be University). Entrance Test for those students who qualified UGC-NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/SLET/GATE/CEED and similar national level tests approved by the University may be exempted.
    • Professional qualification in Chartered Accountancy/Cost Accountancy/Company Secretary as awarded by the respective Statutory Institutes of India will be considered as equivalent to Master’s Degree for the purpose of enrolment for Ph.D. in Commerce, Management and/or related disciplines as approved by the Regulatory Authority concerned.
    • No candidate will ordinarily be permitted for admission to Ph.D. programme in a Subject/Faculty different from the one in which the candidate has obtained the Master’s Degree. However, permission to pursue in a different Subject/Faculty may be considered by the DC in special cases with conditions as may be prescribed.

    + Admission Guidelines

    Admission Guidelines for Full-time Ph.D.:
    The candidates seeking admission for a PhD in full-time mode shall follow the guidelines mentioned below, failure to adhere to these shall lead to cancellation of admission.
    • Coursework classes will be held during the first six months immediately after the registration into the programme.
    • Coursework classes will be held during weekdays between Monday to Friday between 09:00 A.M. to 04:00 P.M.
    • The full time scholars must be available on campus between 09:00 A.M. to 01:00 P.M. on saturdays.
    • After the completion of coursework, the full-time scholars will be assigned with 4 to 6 hours of departmental activities either by way of teaching or administrative activities.
    Admission Guidelines for Part-time Ph.D.:
    • Coursework classes: During the first six months of the programme, scholars will be engaged in the coursework. The coursework classes shall be held on all Saturdays and Sundays except on public holidays. Saturday classes will be held between 09:00 A.M. to 04:00 P.M. and Sunday classes will be held between 9 am to 2 pm. Minimum of 85% of attendance is mandatory during the coursework. If the scholar fails to reach 85% of attendance, he/she will not be allowed to take the end of the coursework exam during that semester. The scholar shall repeat the coursework in the next cycle and then take the end of coursework examination. The scholar will get only one repeat chance.
    • Admission will be considered provisional till the scholar completes the coursework examination successfully and submit the final approved copy of the proposal to the Centre for Research.
    • It is mandatory for all part-time scholars to meet the allotted supervisor at least twice a month in person during the working hours of the university/school/department.
    • A Research Advisory Committee (RAC) shall monitor the progress of the research scholar on a regular basis. The RAC is a minimum three-member committee, headed by the supervisor, who will be the chairperson of the committee. The supervisor will convene the RAC meeting even during weekdays. It is mandatory that the scholar attends the RAC meeting whenever it is called for. Scholars must complete a minimum of four RAC meetings in a year.
    • The candidate who wishes to take admission for PhD in part-time mode in CHRIST (Deemed to be University) must obtain “NO Objection Certificate” from the Organization/Institution in which he/she is employed clearly stating that:
      • The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis.
      • His/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research.
      • If required, he/she will be relieved from the duty to complete the coursework.
    • Admission to the part-time PhD programme is open to employed individuals preferably.
    • There will be a provision to switch from part-time to full-time mode later with the permission of the Organization/Institution where he/she is employed. However, the scholar will not be encouraged to switch back to part-time mode later.

    + Selection Process

    The selection process (ET_SA_MP_PI)* will be conducted on the date/s chosen while filling the application or as announced by the office of admissions.
    The selection process will be held in person at the venue selected while submitting the application form online.

    Selection process Admit card for the programme will be generated ONE or TWO days before the scheduled selection process date OR as mentioned in the Important dates on the university website. Applicants must attend the same at the specified date and time mentioned on the admit card. Travel arrangements have to be made in advance according to the date chosen while submitting application.

    CHRIST follows University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D Degrees) new Regulations, and the subsequent Amendments.

    CHRIST (Deemed to be University) offers PhD in Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce, Management, Engineering and Law in full-time mode.

    Eligibility for PhD
    The minimum eligibility of candidates intending to pursue a doctoral programme is a pass with a minimum of 55% in the postgraduate programme in the discipline/specialization. Students who have completed their post-graduation from an international university must submit an equivalency certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

    The selection process for PhD comprises of Entrance Examination, Research Skill Assessment and Personal Interview. *However, as per the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degrees) new Regulations, those who qualify UGC-NET (including JRF) / UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF) / SLET / GATE / teacher fellowship holder (KSET, SET etc.) or have passed M.Phil Programme shall be exempted from the Entrance Examination and take only a Research Skill Assessment Test along with their Personal Interview.

    Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/SLET/GATE/ teacher fellowship holder (KSET, SET etc.) or have passed M.Phil Programme may apply for PhD programme online, and send the Research Proposal and CV to phd@christuniversity.in any time of the year. For such candidates, the Research Skill Assessment and Personal Interview will be held separately. Application is to be submitted online using the current format.
