Kidderpore College, a government-aided co-educational college, was founded in the year 1966 by the erstwhile Rector of Kidderpore Academy Sri Jitendranath Bandyopadhyay. Kidderpore Academy is a school adjacent to the present college building. His vision was to open up the doors of higher education to the wards of the poor residents of the locality. He worked hard to apprise the local people. This college is affiliated to the University of Calcutta since its inception. Situated in a part of the city which people from different linguistic and religious communities inhabit, the college typically represents the rich variety of our country. Along with the Bengali speaking students, there are students who speak Hindi, Urdu, Nepali and Oriya. This area occupies a special position in the cultural map of Kolkata. Kidderpore was residence to three notable nineteenth century Bengali poets — Michael Madhusudan Dutta, Hemchandra Bandyopadhyay and Rangalal Bandyopadhyay.
