On 16th September 1966, a degree college was established exclusively for Commerce discipline to run in the evening shift, named after the great scientist and philosopher Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, perhaps as a logical conclusion following the first
instance of naming the local day college after him. The college started its journey as a Co-educational Evening college with Pre-University as well as B.Com (Genl.) Course affiliated to the University of Calcutta. To meet the prolonged students' demand, this college had been rechristened as "Naba Barrackpur Prafulla chandra Mahavidyalaya" in 2005 which obtained extension of affiliation of four Arts subjects for General Course and Honours Course in Economics. In the same year there was an introduction of vocational Course in X + 2 with Business & Commerce Stream, due to the abolition of H.S. Course (General Stream). In 2006 extension of affiliation in three more Arts subjects was obtained along with Engineering Technology in Vocational course.
To satisfy the overwhelming need for educational facilities for the children of thousands of refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, who started settling at New Barrackpur Colony, educational institutions of different categories viz. Primary / Secondary Schools and Colleges were set up by a group of local enthusiasts and social workers amongst whom Late Haripada Biswas's name is mentionworthy. Soon a voice was raised that an institution imparting Commerce course was missing for local aspirants who wanted to learn while they earn by studying in the evening.
Finally on 16th September 1966, a degree college was established exclusively for Commerce discipline to run in the evening shift, named after the great scientist and philosopher Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, perhaps as a logical conclusion following the first instance of naming the local day college after him. Undoubtedly, compliments are due to those who picked up the name of this personality who had unequivocally encouraged sons of the soil to go for the promotion of business and commerce instead of running after employment alone.
