Saheed Anurupchandra Mahavidyalaya, established in 1991, is a co-educational institution, imparting education in a really ideal secular context-based on the socio-cultural background, free from the considerations of caste and creed.
The college is situated in rural setting about 50 km from the city center of Kolkata and only of its kind in a radius of 20 km. The nearest industrial township is about 15 km away. The students we get are mostly from agro-based families, a small percentage of students’ parents work in nearby factories. Thus a considerable fraction of the students come from BPL card-holder (Below Poverty Line, as per Govt. criteria) families and belongs to SC/ST/OBCs. More than 85% of the parents fall under the non-graduate category. So our aim is to initiate first-generation learners into the sphere of higher education through preparing them as graduates. Not only the conventional education, the aim of our educational institution includes health awareness, development of healthy attitude and overall consciousness.
And so here we are in 2009, with 800 students (in Faculty of Arts and Commerce with four Honours Courses in Arts) within 18 years of the inception of the college in 1991 with just 38 students of B.A. (General Course) in the ground floor of a four-roomed building.
