Rani Birla Girls’ college was established in July 1961 as an undergraduate arts college affiliated to the University of Calcutta by the Hindusthan Charity Trust in the memory of Rani Jogeshwari Devi Birla to serve as a women’s educational institution to impart all round education to its students in a progressive, enlightened ambience. The present day Modern High School at 78, Amir Ali Avenue, Kolkata used to house this College on the top floor of its building. Despite being in its nascent stage, Rani Birla Girls’ College outshone itself in all spheres of academics, a tradition which has continued unbroken till date. The insistence on the 3Ds-Discipline, Diligence, and Dedication ensures that students emerge from the four walls of the institution not only as graduates but as confident, mature and well-equipped individuals.

In 1979,due to space constraint,the campus of Rani Birla Girl's College shifted to its present day address on Shakespeare sarani.Since then the number of students enrolled in the College has multiplied manifold.It has always managed to come out on top of all difficulties and hazards faced by it.It has retained its academic atmosphere with special emphasis on the all round development of the students.The most special characteristic of this college is the co-ordinated team-work of the teaching staff with the students,which helps to bring about a special teacher-student bonding and hightened academic excellence.

The college was brought under the direct administration of the University Of Calcutta which appointed an administrator for the purpose. According to stature 93 of the Calcutta University First statures,a new Governing Body was constituted in march 2002,consisting of representatives from the university of Calcutta,the Higher Education department of the Government of West Bengal,teaching as well as a non-teaching staff and from the students of College.Since then,the College has been functioning under this democratic Governing body.
